Position Summary

The Engineering Technologist Ill position is the third level of the non-Engineer degreed technical support role. An Engineering Technologist Ill provides technical expertise to solve more complex problems and leadership skills to provide oversight and direction of work in a specific area of expertise, with some supervision. Employees in the Engineering Technologist Il l position are expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with a high degree of independence.

The Senior Engineering Technologist position is the fourth level of the non-Engineering degreed technical support role. The Senior Engineering Technologist provides technical expertise to solve more complex problems, and leadership skills to manage work in a specific area of expertise, with minimal supervision. Employees in the Senior Engineering Technologist position are expected to develop advanced skills and work independently with increased latitude for un-reviewed work.

Responsibilities

  • Some Tasks follow set guidelines or procedures.

  • Employee has the authority to make significant choices and decisions without specific guidance or direction from the Manager.

  • Applies technical expertise in the identification, analysis, and resolution of problems in area of expertise.

  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities.

  • Conducts engineering and related studies to prepare thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches with limited guidance.

  • Strives to continually improve job-related, technical, and professional knowledge, skills and performance of self and junior engineers.

  • Works as One to develop and promote positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities within group and cross work-group boundaries.

  • Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills.

  • Maintains accurate records and files.

  • Participates in other assigned duties during emergency or storm events.

  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally .

  • Storm duty is required and traveling to other areas in the Carolinas, Midwest and Florida is required. Overnight stays for storm travel will be required too. Customer Communication is critical.

    ​ Required/Basic Qualifications

Note: This posting is for one open position. Dependent on relevant experience, the level to which a candidate is aligned is outlined below.

Engineering Tech lll

  • Associate's degree in engineering technology (or equivalent).

  • In addition to required degree, 5 years related work experience

  • In lieu of the degree and 5 years' experience, High School/GED and 9 years related work experience.

Sr Engineering Tech

  • Associate's degree in engineering technology (or equivalent).

  • In addition to required degree, 8 years related work experience

  • In lieu of the degree and 8 years' experience, High School/GED and 12 years related work experience.

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology

  • In addition to desired degree, 5 years related work experience

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

  • Experience in the utility industry.

  • Able to effectively apply basic principles of project management.

Working Conditions

  • Hybrid – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to their designated Duke Energy facility.

  • The first 90 days of employment will be in the office. Afterward they are required to be in the office so many days a week in compliance with Duke practices.

Specific Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

  • Either 3+ years of relevant industry experience coupled with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology (or equivalent), or 5+ years of experience and Associate Degree in Engineering Technology (or equivalent), or 9+ years equivalent experience without a degree.
