Position Qualifications An appropriate combination of education, training, course work, and experience may qualify an applicant to demonstrate required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of an acceptable qualification is: Experience in grounds maintenance and equipment operation and no less than three years of experience in a grounds maintenance supervisory position. Demonstrable ability to maintain good public relations and manage cemetery, park, and recreational programs. High School Diploma minimum with two years technical or Associates Degree preferred in Park & Recreation, Environmental Science, Natural Resources, Business Management, or equivalent. Ability to document identity and employment eligibility within three (3) days of original appointment as a condition of employment in compliance with Immigration Reform and Control Act requirements. Licensure or Certification Requirements State motor vehicle operator's license. Category 5 Core Commercial Pesticide Applicator's License (pesticide license to be obtained within one [1] year of employment). Distinguishing Job Characteristics Under general direction manages City Cemetery, Parks and Recreation Division, and maintenance operations. Essential Duties and Responsibilities To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential duty listed below. Manages City parks and recreation activities, cemetery, and other facilities maintenance functions. Supervises Crew Leader (Parks & Recreation), Maintenance Workers, Vehicle/Equipment Operator 1, work releases, seasonals and volunteer employees when applicable engaged in maintain city parks, cemetery, and other grounds. Plans and assigns tasks and works projects, plans and coordinates work priorities, trains staff, appraises employee performance, administers disciplinary actions, approves leaves, and ensures work complies with quality standards. Coordinates with various labor support groups including Experience Works, Job & Family Services, youth groups, church groups, Boy Scouts, jail work release crews, etc. to recruit volunteer assistance for parks and cemetery maintenance operations. Works with general public and public officials in setting and exploring ways of accomplishing goals. Resolves issues, gives and receives information, answers difficult inquiries, and maintains good public relations. Develops Cemetery, Park Maintenance, Stadium, Recreation, and Riverside Park maintenance budgets and submits to Public Service Director for approval. Monitors expenditures to ensure compliance with approved budgetary guidelines. Administers trust funds for cemetery lots. Manages and ensures maintenance and cleanliness of park areas and public buildings. Assigns and coordinates staff to mow grasses, trim shrubs and trees, prepare athletic fields for use, and other grounds maintenance tasks. Manages maintenance of city cemeteries and ensures pleasant neat appearance. Maintains responsibility for funeral arrangements, lot sales, foundation sales, and installation. Handles maintenance requests. Organizes and implements preparation for burials. Confers with funeral directors, vault representatives, florists, clergy, and others to give and receive information and work functions. Assists the general public with genealogy research and
