Nevada Copper Underground Electrician in Yerington, Nevada

Nevada Copper (TSX:NCU) is a copper producer and owner of the Pumpkin Hollow copper project. Located in Nevada, USA, Pumpkin Hollow has substantial reserves and resources including copper, gold and silver. Its two fully permitted projects include the high-grade underground mine and processing facility, which is now in the production stage, and a large-scale open pit project, which is advancing towards feasibility status.

Summary of Position:

The Underground Electrician will be responsible for the safe identification, troubleshooting, planning, and completion of underground related electrical maintenance activities.

Essential Functions:

  • Troubleshoot and perform all electrical repairs as required in underground equipment, as well as stationary fixed equipment

  • Installing, repairing, and maintaining electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures in the underground mine

  • Perform electrical maintenance duties on underground equipment such as the hoist and shaft

  • Maintenance testing of low to high voltage (13.8kV) electrical equipment in the underground including transformers, switchgear, protective relays, circuit breakers, cables, and motors

  • Fabrication and installation of various low voltage electrical equipment (distribution boards, lighting, etc.) throughout the underground mine

  • Repair and maintenance of instrumentation throughout the mine

  • May be required to operate certain mine equipment to diagnose problems, position it for repairs to be made, test operation after making repairs

  • Troubleshoot and perform electrical repairs faults with electrical wiring and equipment, including transformers, motors, instrumentation (limit switches, flow meters, totalizers, etc.), generators, lighting systems, protective relays, switchgear and associated components, control panels and associated equipment

  • Maintaining personal hand tools for functionality and cleanliness

  • Maintaining a high standard of housekeeping in all work areas to provide a safe and healthy workplace for all employees, contractors, and vendors

  • Able to complete daily tasks and provide reports Providing updated electrical drawings (red lines) to the site Electrical Engineer

  • Implementing protective relay settings into existing protective relays based on settings provided by the site Electrical Engineer

  • Implementing programming of PLCs as required

  • Participating in commissioning activities of new equipment installed in the underground mine

  • Establishing work relationships necessary to efficiently execute the daily electrical activities

  • Demonstrate a personal commitment to working safely as an advocate and leader of a safe work culture for all employees with a specific focus on lock-out procedures and avoiding hand related injuries

  • Actively participate in daily safety meetings

  • Other duties as assigned

    Experience and Training:

    Requirements:

  • A minimum of two (2) years underground electrical experience in an underground mining or production environment preferred

  • System commissioning experience in an industrial environment

  • High school diploma or GED

  • Shaft and hoist experience, preferred

  • Exemplary safety performance and attendance record

  • Ability to work safely and effectively in an underground mining environment

  • Perform and document work area inspections and equipment inspection/ operation cards

  • Ability to read complex prints and understanding of electrical codes

  • Ability to perform physical labor under all weather conditions

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and proven track record of being a team player

  • Proficient in MS Office applications (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint)

    Preferred Credentials:

  • High voltage experience

  • Nevada Journeyman electrician certification or MSHA Green Card preferred

  • Knowledge of control systems, PLC’s, and other logic control devices

  • Knowledge of digital protective relays including SEL and Schneider

  • Knowledge of underground mining heavy equipment

  • Ability to use proficiently a CMMS (MS Dynamics, SAP, etc.)

    Work Environment:

    The work environments characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be working in an underground environment and may work in extreme cold/hot conditions, occasionally exposed fumes or airborne particles, chemicals, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high; appropriate hearing protection may be needed and required.

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is expected to be always worn while in a production environment (hard hat, safety belt, self-rescue respiratory device, steel toed boots/metatarsal protection, reflective visible clothing) or as required for a specific job duty.

  • Support the site safety culture through leadership and regularly engaging with and holding the workforce accountable for safe work practices.

  • Participate in health and safety meetings and risk reviews as required

    Physical Demands:

    The incumbent must demonstrate the following physical demands:

  • Lift and carry up to 50-70 lbs. in weight

  • Periodically work in environmental extremes (i.e., hot or cold weather)

  • Sit for extended periods of time

  • Standing for extended periods of time

  • Working in confined space at times

  • Stay alert during periods of inactivity

  • Walk on uneven and poorly lit ground

  • Work independently on a rotating day shift/night shift

Work Schedule, Personal Protective/Other Equipment:

The incumbent is expected to work on either a rotating day shift or a rotating day/night shift schedule, with some call-outs possible for infrequent occurrences. The incumbent is responsible for supplying and maintaining his/her own tools. Personal Protective Equipment required and to be worn for the field work portion of this position includes, but is not limited to, hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, and steel-toed boots. All equipment must be MSHA approved as applicable.
