Job purpose

As the Senior Manager of Global Software Engineering, you will be responsible for leading BorgWarner’s (BW) Charging global software development initiatives, both embedded firmware (FW) and cloud software (SW) in USA, China and Europe. You will define and drive the global software and firmware architecture, ensuring alignment with BorgWarner Charging’s vision for a modular platform. While leading global teams, you will foster innovation and ensure that all development efforts meet the highest standards of quality, security, and customer satisfaction.

You will oversee the development processes, team structure, and technical execution, ensuring that BorgWarner’s software strategy aligns with both global and local market needs. This role is essential for establishing our leadership position in the industry and scaling our software solutions globally. While the team includes software engineers in Michigan and Northern Italy, the majority are based in China, necessitating significant time spent there.

Key responsibilities

Strategy and Architecture

  • Translate BorgWarner’s strategy into a scalable ecosystem architecture, determining what to develop internally and where to leverage partnerships, while setting development priorities and identifying out-of-scope areas.

  • Help Develop and drive BorgWarner’s long-term product and feature roadmap, ensuring alignment with the modular platform strategy.

  • Lead the design and execution of cloud and embedded solutions to ensure compliance with BorgWarner’s modular vision, meeting both local and global standards.

  • Ensure consistent implementation of architecture across global teams, maintaining high quality and alignment.

  • Contribute to strategic customer engagement, ensuring solutions address their needs while preserving the integrity of the overall architecture.

  • Proactively connecting with the Service teams to ensure the availability of the right data, thereby maintaining high reliability and service standards.

Organizational Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead a unified global FW/SW team of approximately 20 members, in coordination with three local engineering leaders. Drive recruitment, team building, and capability development across all regions, ensuring architectural alignment and operational efficiency across global teams.

  • Identify and address skill gaps and develop in-house capabilities where necessary to reduce external dependencies, performing make-or-buy analyses for critical systems.

  • Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and high performance, uniting global teams under a shared vision and purpose.

Process, Tools, and Best Practices

  • Establish and implement global development processes that ensure consistency in requirements management, code quality, modularity, documentation, and security, Ensuring the successful delivery of high-quality, scalable, and reliable software products.

  • Lead the adoption of best practices in software development, including code reviews, DevOps, CI/CD, and Agile methodologies, with a focus on delivering scalable and resilient software solutions.

  • Continuously optimize development operations to enhance productivity, collaboration, and innovation across all teams.

Cybersecurity and Data Privacy

  • Lead the integration of comprehensive cybersecurity strategies into all software and firmware development efforts, ensuring adherence to global standards.

  • Ensure compliance with data privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR), conducting security audits, and implementing rigorous protection measures across all systems.

Global User Experience (UX/UI)

  • Drive the implementation of user-centered design principles across all software and firmware products, enhancing user experience and satisfaction for all stakeholders, including installation, maintenance, operation, and end-users.

  • Lead efforts to incorporate UX/UI best practices into development to ensure intuitive and user-friendly products.

Standards and Industry Leadership

  • Represent BorgWarner, or have BW represented, in relevant standardization bodies, driving and influencing industry standards to align with the company’s strategic goals.

  • Stay at the forefront of industry trends, incorporating the latest innovations and standards into BorgWarner’s software solutions.

What we’re looking for

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

  • 12+ years of extensive experience in software engineering and global team management, while leading diverse, cross-functional teams to deliver innovative software solutions.

  • Software experience in EV charging

  • Expertise in software architecture, embedded systems, cloud solutions, and a deep understanding of cybersecurity best practices and data privacy regulations.

  • Strong knowledge of Agile methodologies, DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and software development lifecycle management (SDLC).

  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and mentorship abilities, with a talent for building high-performing, cross-functional teams.

  • Willingness to travel up to 20% (if based in China).

  • Willingness to travel up to 40% (if based outside of China)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

  • Experience in the EV Charging or automotive industry.

  • Participation in standardization organizations and influencing global standards.

  • Proven ability to drive UX/UI initiatives that improve product usability and customer satisfaction.
