Primary function of this job is to assist the Acute Care Nursing Department in their daily duties by providing daily clerical support, coordination of patient flow from the nursing station and assisting with basic patient care under close supervision of a Registered Nurse in a responsible, respectful and caring manner to promote effective staff relationships. Maintains patient confidentiality.

There is a risk of constant exposure to illness, injury, and disease. Multi-tasks efficiently and maintains organizational skills during frequent interruptions throughout the day. Work requires standing and walking in a small station with heavy people traffic. Phones ring frequently, with many interruptions. Concentration is required in a chaotic environment. Very fast paced position with pressure and multiple demands being placed upon incumbent. Position is interspersed with occasional periods of calm that require independence to seek out and do tasks as outlined.

  • Provides clerical support to all nursing areas as required; answers phone calls; may accurately transcribe and transmit physician’s orders; performs clerical duties related to patient admission, transfer or discharge; insures that new charts are ready for admissions or transfers; insures that all paperwork in the patient’s clinical chart have correct patient identifiers on each page; maintains admission/transfer/discharge for hospital patients; enters physician’s orders for radiological tests; enters physician’s orders for laboratory tests; schedules patients and follow-up appointments, x-rays, and labs; schedules referrals for patients/residents; assists customers by providing complete instructions and phone numbers to make appointments as directed by physicians orders and the nurse.

  • Maintains clerical supplies on unit as required including paper supplies, pens, pencils, office supplies, and printer supplies; keeps nurses’ station clean, tidy, and sanitized; receives stock supplies; informs appropriate person of needed stock. Maintains confidentiality regarding administrative and patient issues. Ensure quality patient care despite the situation encountered, be it routine or emergent. Knowledge of human behavior during stressful situations in order to exercise emotional control, tact, patience and reliability in support of patient care.

  • Recognizes signs or symptoms requiring prompt intervention and acts appropriately. Transport patients within the facility, as needed. Demonstrate ability to smoothly manage patient care duties.

  • Report, and when appropriate, record any changes observed in condition or behavior of patients, unusual incidents or breeches in safety. Observe patients to insure children, elderly, or impaired patients who require observation or assistance have someone in attendance.

  • Participates in in-services and educational programs in the hospital, and/or community as assigned; refers unresolved problems with patients/coworkers/visitors to Critical Access Hospital Manager or Chief Nursing Officer for resolution; completes annual competencies, evaluation material, and maintains certifications; addresses employee concerns consistent with consortium policies.

  • Other duties as assigned.


  • High School Diploma or GED.

  • Completion of 8 Hour online C.N.A. course.


  • One (1) year of computer experience, preferred

  • Two (2) years of experience working with the public in person and on the telephone, preferred.

  • Healthcare environment preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies:

Knowledge of:

  • General office procedures and basic computer programs, english, math, general writing and word processing.

  • Professional telephone etiquette. Ability to interact with patients and health care professionals in a positive and professional manner on a continuous basis.

  • HIPAA and SEARHC Policies.

Skills in:

  • Oral, written and customer service communication skills, can verbally communicate findings with healthcare team.

  • Competently maintains a clean work environment with proper infection control measure including equipment cleaning.

Ability to:

  • Recognize and respond appropriately in emergency situations.

  • Work cooperatively with others by establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationships with patients, visitors, and other healthcare team members.

  • Assure confidentiality of patient information.

  • Learn and use various EMR systems and accurately record patient data
