Job Title: Phlebotomist

Job Description

Summary: The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.

Responsibilities

  • Experience performing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data, and decontamination.

  • Updating patient information.

  • Collecting and storing specimens according to established procedures.

  • Properly explaining the process of venipuncture and other specimen collections such as urine or fecal in a clear but courteous manner.

  • Demonstrating techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.

  • Fully understanding all physicians' orders.

  • Matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.

  • Labeling, centrifuging, splitting, and freezing specimens as required by test order.

  • Checking all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.

  • Packaging specimens for transport.

  • Storing specimen samples at the required temperature and placing samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes.

  • Accurately labeling and following different procedures as outlined by specific protocols necessary for transport to maintain the integrity of the specimen.

  • Understanding and complying with OSHA and DEP regulations.

  • Attending annual department trainings.

  • Answering telephone calls and reading laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

Essential Skills

  • 2 plus years of experience in phlebotomy Required

  • Customer service experience

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Phlebotomy certification required

  • High School Diploma or GED

Work Environment

The phlebotomist will be working at an Internal Medicine IOP and a nearby PSC (Patient Service Center) in Woodbridge, VA. At the IOP, the phlebotomist will see approximately 30 patients per day, and at the PSC, approximately 20 patients per day. The PSC is located less than a mile from the IOP. Work hours are from 8 am to 4:30 pm.
