Summary Orlando VA Healthcare System is looking for a Recreation Therapist- Program Coordinator for the Adaptive Sports Program. The Adaptive Sports Coordinator serves as a collaborator and consultant to providers and participants of adaptive sports programming throughout the Orlando VA Healthcare System (OVAHCS). This position will be located at our Winter Park location. Responsibilities The Recreation Therapist (Adaptive Sports Program Coordinator) uses independent judgment of clinical information to administer specialized, complex, and extensive recreation therapy treatment theories, techniques, and evaluation methodologies in the provision of care to a diverse patient population with varying diagnoses, functional impairments, and cultural backgrounds while providing patient care primarily in adaptive sports programming. Duties include but are not limited to: Leads the adaptive sports program in all care settings. Advises providers, physician residents, and staff, as well as other health care specialists, in matters concerning adaptive sports programming and management of patients with complex health problems. Provides formal and informal instruction as needed to nursing and other hospital personnel and serves as point of contact to prosthetics for adaptive sports needs and/or equipment. Completes the consult process, treating patients, discharge planning, as well as, scheduling patients, and completing encounters. Serve to ensure the identification of community resources and patient education materials related to adaptive sports for patient use following discharge. Leads video-facilitated therapy. Serves as primary mentor on-site with RT clinical interns seeking adaptive sports specialty experience. Responsible for the development and maintenance of Recreation Therapy documentation templates and tools utilized in adaptive sports and fitness. Responsible for development and maintenance of Recreation Therapy adaptive sports and fitness treatment protocols. Maintains clinic areas, cleans, and organizes therapy equipment and supplies to promote quality treatment in a safe and functionally appropriate environment. Responsibility for planning and coordinating the efforts of the Veteran team representing OVAHCS VHS at national games and events. Responsible for providing specialized and complex Recreation Therapy (RT) evaluations and treatment to Veterans. Provides RT treatment across multiple areas of service such as Dementia Practice, Substance Abuse, Medical-Based Fitness, Inpatient/Outpatient and Tele/Whole-Health settings. The Adaptive Sports Coordinator provides clinical practice guidance for other recreation therapy and support staff involved in adaptive sports programming. Evaluates for specific assistive technology needs and makes recommendations to the referring provider on appropriate equipment for issuance of adaptive sports equipment. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. Must be proficient in spoken and written English, as required by 38 U.S.C. ยง 7403(f). Education. The following education is required: A bachelor's degree or higher, from an accredited college or university, with a major in therapeutic recreation or recreation/leisure, with an option and/or emphasis in therapeutic recreation. The degree must be approved by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC); OR, A bachelor's degree or higher in any field from an accredited college or university and must be a certified therapeutic recreation specialist (CTRS). The degree must be approved by the NCTRC. If hired under this education, the certification cannot be waived. Foreign Education. To be creditable, education completed outside the U.S. must have been submitted to a private organization that specializes in the interpretation of foreign educational credentials. The private organization must deem such education at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. programs. Certification-Submit Documentation. Applicants must be certified in recreation therapy as a CTRS by the NCTRC. If hired under paragraph 3b(1)(b), certification cannot be waived. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criterial must be met: Recreation Therapist (Program Coordinator) GS-12: Experience. At least one year of creditable experience at the next lower grade level. (GS-11) Knowledge, Skills and Abilities. In addition to the experience, you must demonstrate the following KSA's: Knowledge of management/administration principles, procedures, and practice, which includes supervision, consultation, negotiation, mediation, and monitoring. Ability to analyze clinically appropriate data and make recommendations to optimize quality, efficiency, performance, and productivity within services. Ability to perform the full range of supervisory duties when authorized, which would include responsibility for assignment of work to be performed; competency assessments; performance evaluations; selection of staff; recommendation of awards, advancements, and disciplinary actions when appropriate. Ability to monitor and report on the status and progress of work, evaluate program quality to ensure that methods, deadlines, and standards have been met, and prioritize the workload. Ability to effectively communicate goals, objectives, and focused initiatives to an interdisciplinary team, specialized clinical program, or subsection, as well as guide the team members on work methods, practices, standards, and procedures. Knowledge of regulatory requirements, interdisciplinary structure, and organizational structure to serve as a liaison between specialty care and other programs that would affect coordination of care, healthcare access, program evaluation, assessment, and planning future needs. Skill in employing recognized leadership and managerial methods and strategies, including interpersonal relations and conflict resolution in the management of employees, team leaders, and managers. Preferred Experience: Two years of experience in adaptive sports and/or the national games, in addition to a level II specialty certification. Physical Requirements: Exerting 20-50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The position requires standing, walking, squatting, bending, and sitting, and changing from one position to the other frequently throughout the day. Sitting at a desk and using upper extremities to reach, grasp and place papers, charts, and binders. Reaching, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling: 1-10 pounds constantly, 10-25 frequently, and 20-50 pounds occasionally. Picking up, carrying, Lifting and carrying adaptive equipment ranging in weight from negligible to 50 pounds. Pushing and rolling equipment such as walkers, wheelchairs, and supply carts.Assisting patients in mobility such as ambulation and transfers, from minimal assistance to dependent transfers, which may be up to 50 pounds. Recreation Therapy requires good manual dexterity to manipulate tools and equipment.
