DUTIES:

Reporting to the Manager of Growth/Deputy City Planner, this position will be responsible for: researching issues affecting growth and development in the community; will recommend land use policy to promote efficient and effective land use patterns and complete neighbourhoods; research and prepare reports with recommendations as part of planning studies to the Development and Heritage Standing Committee, Committees of Council and City Council; facilitate public consultation, liaise with stakeholders and undertake community outreach; research and prepare reports related to Official Plan amendments, Community Improvement Plans, heritage planning and special studies; conduct statistical analysis and prepare projections on demographics and land use requirements; assist with the coordination of databases regarding land use patterns, population and economic resources; conduct studies on physical, social and environmental conditions including those which promote walkable, strong neighbourhoods and active transportation; conduct studies and develop policies related to local economic development; review and provide recommendations on policy initiatives proposed by senior levels of government;  provide expert evidence at hearings of the Ontario Land Tribunal and other tribunals; provide advice to public agencies, community/neighbourhood associations, the general public and internal service units of the Corporation with regard to the key responsibilities of the Planning Department and answer public inquiries. Will perform Occupational Health & Safety duties as outlined in the Corporation’s Health and Safety Program.  Will perform other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Please note that all qualifications must be met and valid at time of posting period close date unless otherwise specified.

  • Must have a University degree in Planning or related field or Ontario Ministry of Education equivalency and a minimum of four (4) years experience in planning or related field;

  • Must be a full Member of the Canadian Institute of Planners (MCIP) or must be able to attain full membership within three (3) years of accepting the position;

  • Must have the ability to travel to off-site locations in a timely and expedient manner as required.  If method of travel is by vehicle, a current valid and lawful Driver's Licence is required in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act and must provide a driver’s abstract as a condition of employment.

  • Must have knowledge of the Planning Act and Ontario Heritage Act, related legislation, provincial policies, development review and Official Plan amendment processes.

  • Must have excellent verbal, written, and visual communication skills; ability to make oral presentations; ability to develop and use graphic aids;

  • Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft suite of products, graphic software and land based information systems; a proficiency in ArcGIS is desirable;

  • Must have excellent organizational and interpersonal skills;

  • Must have the ability to solve problems and meet deadlines under pressure;

  • Should have knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, its regulations and knowledge of the hazards associated with work;

  • The physical demands analysis associated with this job indicates a sedentary level of work.
