GE Vernova Radiation Protection Monitor - 1st Shift in Wilmington, North Carolina

Job Description Summary

The Radiation Protection Monitor (Technician) will provide radiological support for the radiation safety function at Wilmington Field Services Center in Wilmington, NC. In this position, you will support our organization with radiological protection support with Boiling Water Reactor Control Rod Drives, In-Vessel Inspection Tooling, and other components that are being repaired and refurbished. Radiation Protection personnel play a key role in assuring compliance with applicable licenses and regulations, including performance of radiation protection dose rate and contamination surveys, and maintaining radiation protection audit records. Radiation Protection Monitor take appropriate actions and make recommendations to ensure the health and safety of our employees, the public, and the environment.

The typical schedule is M-F, 7am – 3pm, with occasional overtime. This position starts at $38.0646/hour and after 6 months of satisfactory performance, will increase to $38.6582/hour. This position is eligible for an additional hourly premium of $2/hour for performing work inside our Radiologically Contaminated Areas.

Job Description

Essential responsibilities of the Radiation Protection Monitor include, but are not limited to:

  • Monitoring Radiologically Controlled Areas on a regularly scheduled basis using fixed and portable dose rate and contamination survey instruments to evaluate conditions and airborne radiation levels.

  • Providing Radiation Protection job coverage support to facility operations and maintenance personnel to ensure regulatory and procedural requirements are met.

  • Calculate air sample results and evaluate radiological conditions against procedures, to ensure expected conditions have not been exceeded.

  • Providing radiological evaluation of area and component decontamination activities.

  • Preparing and Maintaining Radiation Work Permits.

  • Implement regulatory required programs, such as radioactive material/waste shipping, instrumentation calibrations and source checks, and dosimetry issuance.

  • Brief Radiation workers on radiological hazards of the work area.

  • Ability to work well with peers.

  • Promote and drive continuous improvement and team engagement.

  • Support cross functional duties to support other needs of the business, such as Emergency Response Organization.

Minimum Qualifications :

  • Minimum of High school graduate (or GED)

  • Must meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Qualified to NAVSEA 389-0153 Article 108 or NAVSEA 389-0288 Article 108 (or equivalent Department of Defense training or qualification), or

  • NRRPT or American Academy of Health Physics certification, or

  • Completed at least 30 semester hours at an accredited post-secondary institution in science related fields as approved by Radiation Protection Management, or

  • Radiation Protection Technician (or equivalent), or

  • Department of Energy – Core RCT certification, or

  • Prior qualification as a Radiation Protection Monitor by GEH or GNF-A.

  • Minimum of twelve months or 2000 hours of experience performing radiation and contamination surveys, operating contamination and air sampling counting equipment, and performing radiation monitoring as approved by Radiation Protection Management.

Eligibility Requirements :

  • Ability to successfully pass the qualification program for this position. This includes written and oral technical examinations, and qualification in the Emergency Organization’s Field Monitoring team within 5 months of hire.

  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders. Moderate physical demands are required for some job functions which may include bending and squatting, and occasional lifting (20 - 35 lbs.)

  • For controlled area assignments, ability to wear protective clothing and follow strict radiation protection, criticality, and industrial safety regulations. Must be medically and mentally capable of wearing appropriate respiratory equipment including half and/or full-face masks for entire shift.

  • Mental capability to successfully recognize, interpret, and check written regulatory requirements and work with complex teams.

  • Ability to operate and interpret radiation protection instruments.

  • Ability to use computers proficiently.

  • Ability to demonstrate written skills to meet required documentation of radiation survey results, incident investigation reports, etc.

  • Ability to effectively communicate with Shop operating personnel, Shop supervisors, and upper layers of management and outside auditors (i.e., regulatory agencies).

  • Ability to achieve a passing score on all Nuclear Safety Training per CP 20-103 and CP 20-105 as defined by for the position. Must be able to achieve all of the requirements within that position.

Desired Qualifications :

  • Prior Nuclear Power Plant Training in accordance with NRC Regulatory Guide 1.8 (Qualification and Training of Personnel for Nuclear Power Plants), Nuclear Energy Institute Skills Qualifications, or INPO NISP-RP-012 (Nuclear Industry Standard Process – Training and Qualifications of Supplemental RP Technicians).

  • National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologist (NRRPT) membership (active or inactive)

  • Bachelor of Science in Health Physics (or higher in a closely related field).

This role requires access to U.S. export-controlled information. If applicable, final offers will be contingent on ability to obtain authorization for access to U.S. export-controlled information from the U.S. Government.
