Novant Health Pharmacy Technician III in Wilmington, North Carolina

Job Summary

Join our fast-paced inpatient pharmacy team and contribute to a crucial healthcare environment. As a member of our team, you will be responsible for a variety of tasks, helping to support the entire hospital.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Rotate through multiple positions on central shifts, including Triage, Carousel, and Pyxis.

  • Triage:

  • Answer nurse inquiries and provide medication-related information.

  • Deliver high-alert medications to ICU, NICU, and other critical care units.

  • Perform additional pharmacy duties as needed.

  • Carousel:

  • Scan and track medications for patients.

  • Repackage medications when necessary.

  • Assist with answering nurse questions and troubleshoot technical issues.

  • Pyxis:

  • Ensure medication availability in Pyxis machines throughout the hospital.

  • Check medication expiration dates and perform necessary updates.

  • Address nurse questions on the floor related to medication dispensing.

Qualifications

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED, required. 2 Year / Associate Degree, preferred (required for validating duties).

  • Experience (required):

  • Acute Care: Prior experience in a minimum of three pharmacy skills (examples may include but are not limited to the following activities: medication distribution, sterile compounding, medication listing, controlled substance accountability, highly privileged ADS, validating duties and/or procurement)...OR...hired as a Pharmacy Tech II Certified, have 2 years experience in acute care and now competently performing a third pharmacy skill as described above.

  • Outpatient Oncology: Minimum of four years of experience in any pharmacy setting with two years in sterile compounding (of IV and/or chemotherapy admixture).

  • Specialty Pharmacy: Minimum of four years of experience in any pharmacy setting required with two years in specialty setting.

  • Licensure/Certification (required):

  • Current registry with applicable State Board(s) of pharmacy.

  • PTCB or NHA Certification within 60 days of hire.

  • A minimum of two relevant specialized certificates/certifications from approved vendors such as PTCB, BPTS or NPTA (examples include but are not limited to product verification, medication history, hazardous drug management, billing/reimbursement, controlled substances diversion prevention, medication therapy management, sterile compounding)...or...one additional certificate/certification for technicians with Validating Tech credentials (NC). The additional certificates/certifications must be obtained within 12 months of hire and maintained as applicable.

  • Additional Skills Required:

  • State registration and/or evidence of renewal is required for both Pharmacists and Technicians fifteen days prior to expiration and Technicians are required to be either certified through Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National Healthcareer Association (NHA).

  • Considerable knowledge and application of basic math skills, including ratio and proportion relationships; strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Basic technology skills. Other duties as outlined in Novant Health and facility specific policies and procedures. Ability to drive/travel to multiple facilities/locations as needed. Ability to work as part of a high performing, change ready and resilient team.

  • Validating duties (NC only): must complete initial didactic and practical training prior to initial validation. Must obtain 99.7% accuracy rate on initial validation and 99% accuracy in subsequent audits.

  • Additional Skills Preferred: Considerable knowledge of medication names (both trade and generic) and their doses, routes of administration, and adverse effects; the ability to demonstrate patient interview skills and strong written and verbal communication skills with other healthcare professionals. Experience with inventory management.
