Distinguishing Features of Work

This is supervisory work of limited scope in the direction of laborers and other employees engaged in performing unskilled, semiskilled and skilled manual tasks. The employee is responsible for organizing, assigning, and supervising the work of a group of employees and ensuring that assigned tasks are performed properly and efficiently. The employee participates in the performance of tasks assigned to his or her employees but is mainly engaged in supervisory work. Assignments are received from an immediate supervisor who checks the work through inspection.

The day and hours for this position:Monday-Friday 7:00am-3:30pm

Bargaining Unit: Service Employee\'s International (SEIU)

Examples of Work Performed
  • Schedules and supervises employees performing laboring and maintenance tasks.
  • Inspects work in progress and completed work of employees.
  • Takes such action as is necessary to rectify complaints relayed by a supervisor.
  • Advises employees supervised as to methods for improving work performed and assists with difficult and technical decisions.
  • Meets with suppliers as required.
  • Assumes responsibility for compliance with relevant standards.
  • Keeps time records and makes simple reports.
  • Assists with minor repair and preventive maintenance.
  • Completion of work assignments will require the operation of a vehicle.

Requirements of Work
  • Skill in the use of tools, equipment and methods necessary to perform various laboring, maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions of the work.
  • Ability to effectively plan, organize, and supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work outdoors when inclement weather conditions exist.
  • Ability to shovel snow, sand, gravel, asphalt, to or from dump truck bed.
  • Ability to tolerate airborne nuisances associated with open grounds, pavement construction, and windy conditions.
  • Ability to lift and carry bulky items weighing up to 80 pounds.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 125 pounds with the assistance of another.
  • Ability to be continuously performing tasks that require one to push, pull, climb (ladders and in and out of vehicular equipment), bend, twist, reach, stand, and walk about (up to a half mile at a time) for most of an eight-hour shift.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas class A commercial driver\'s license (CDL) with an air brake endorsement. f you are a Canadian or Mexican citizen, you will be required to have or obtain a CDL from your home country.
  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
Required Experience and Training

Required Experience and Training

  • One and half years of experience in semiskilled labor and maintenance work.
  • A valid drivers license
  • Ability to acquire Class A CDL with airbrake endorsement within 6 months of hire. If you are a Canadian or Mexican citizen, you will be required to have or obtain a CDL from your home country.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.

Preferred Experience and Training

  • A valid Class A CDL with airbrake endorsement.

Offers of employment will be made contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which will include drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of the results of a police records check.\ \ Starting pay for current City employees will be determined by City of Wichita policy or applicable bargaining unit agreement.
