Whether in a direct-care or support role, your contribution will make a difference in the life of a Texan.The Peer Support Specialist is a person who has a mental health diagnosis and who is in long-term recovery. He/she will provide Peer Support services to children, adolescents, adult, and geriatric psychiatric populations. This individual will work under the supervision of Director of Rights Protection. Peer Specialists assist patients in developing empowerment skills, through self-advocacy. Peer Support Specialists assists with patient workshops, support groups, and other recovery activities. Peer Support Specialists share and provide recovery-oriented materials and maintain and ensure necessary documentation of Peer Support Services.Performs other duties as assigned. Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agencyand#146;s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.Essential Job FunctionsAttends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned. Uses active listening skills to assist persons served in recognizing their strengths and defining their personal goals in an effort to help persons served combat negative self-talk, overcome fears and solve problems. Serves as the facilitator to guide persons served support groups under the direction of the Director of the Rights Protection Office for the purpose of strengthening recovery. Plans and develops group activities to respond to client population needs and requests, providing written material and supplement group activities, publicizing the group and inviting group participation. Communicates and works collaboratively with treatment teams serving as an advocate for persons served. Serves as a role model to persons served in an effort to promote compromise while developing and maintaining supportive relationships with persons served and hospital staff. Participates in structured and unstructured educational activities such as organizing recovery events, providing feedback on unit programming, and otherwise sharing expertise with colleagues. May participate in organizations new employee orientation activities and/or panels for annual forensic conference providing presentations relative the peer support program. Will openly share with persons served and colleagues their recovery stories from mental illness and will likewise be able to identify and describe the supports that promote their recovery.
