Indian Health Service Medical Records Technician (Coder) in Whiteriver, Arizona

Summary This position is located in the Health Information Management Department at the Whiteriver Service Unit, incumbent performs highly technical & specialized functions for an Outpatient & Inpatient coding. Performs ICD-10-CM, CPT & HCPCS coding for reimbursement and statistical purposes. Responsible for the accuracy & timely completion of the medical record. This position will report to the Supervisory Medical Records Administrator onsite. Responsibilities This position is being re-advertised to solicit additional applications. Applicants who applied previously need not reapply unless submitting updated and/or missing information. Selects the correct diagnosis and operation/procedure codes. Abstracts all necessary information and assigns codes (ICD-10, CPT & HCPCS). Determines the final diagnosis and procedures stated by the physician are valid. Works with automated records system. Assist with the review, analysis and technical evaluation of the Electronic Health Record information in relation to the completeness of diagnoses, procedures and provider signatures. Conducts quality control and improvement by tracking and identifying inadequate documentation. Communicating program software and hardware problems and maintaining workload logs. Provides technical assistance with processing and maintaining the ICD codes within the Electronic Health Records as the codes are manually updated into EHR. Responsible for data entry of all outpatient inpatient clinical record information into the RPMS system for transmission. Corrects error listings and reports pertaining to outpatient and inpatient coding. Qualifications To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, GS-0675-05: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Examples include: Provides assistance with processing and maintaining CPT codes within the Electronic Health Records as the codes are manually updated into the EHR System. Abstracts the completed charts for both Inpatient/Outpatient for compliance enforcement of all regulatory requirements. Conducts a thorough review documentation in accordance with the guidelines in order to select the most accurate and descriptive codes in accordance with the CPT/HCPCS (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System). OR 4 years of education above the high school level. OR A combination of education and experience that when combined fully meet the minimum qualifications for this position. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for GS-05 grade level. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, GS-0675-06: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Examples include: Selects the correct diagnosis and operation/procedure codes. If there are multiple diagnoses and procedures are listed, assures the surgical procedures is related to the proper diagnosis. Provides assistance with processing and maintaining CPT codes within the Electronic Health Records as the codes are manually updated into the EHR System. Abstracts the completed charts for both Inpatient/Outpatient for compliance enforcement of all regulatory requirements. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, GS-0675-07: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Examples include: Analyze and abstracts inpatient and outpatient records of services rendered to obtain optimal results. Provides technical assistance with processing and maintaining the ICD codes within the Electronic Health Records. Assist with performing routine audits in accordance with the facility Compliance and Performance Improvement Plans. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, GS-0675-08: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Examples include: Conducts a thorough review documentation in accordance with the guidelines in order to select the most accurate and descriptive codes in accordance with the CPT/HCPCS coding system. Code selection involves discriminating between several different codes, which can overlap in scope, encompass multiple diagnoses, treatments or operations; and include special codes to denote causes of accidents/injury or adverse effects. This position contains a Selective Placement Factor that is required at the GS-08 grade level. Must possess Certification by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or Certified Coding Associate (CCA); or by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) as a Certified Professional Coder (CPC); and must demonstrate proficiency in these necessary skills in assigning and sequencing ICD-10-CM/CPT/HCPCS codes to medical data and procedures. As a certified Coder, assigns the appropriate ICD-10-CM codes for all diagnosis and surgical procedures as required and documented by the provider for outpatient visits, assuring that diagnoses are sequenced appropriately and meets coding guidelines approved by the Cooperating Parties. Also assigns the appropriate CPT-4 code to all outpatient medical, surgical, non-physician professional services and diagnostic services. Assigns the appropriate Level II HCPCS codes for items, supplies, and non-physician services used in reimbursement claims processing. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). Education This position has an education requirement. Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit. This position has promotion potential to the GS-08 grade level. Promotion to the next grade level is at management's discretion and is based on your demonstrated ability to perform the higher level duties, the continuing need for the higher level duties, and "Regulatory/Administrative" approval.
