Merck Scientist, Discovery Biology in West Point, Pennsylvania

Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and highly motivated Scientist to join the Vaccine Platforms group in the Infectious Disease and Vaccines department at our company in West Point, PA. The main objective of our group is to discover and develop novel RNA-based vaccines. Toward this goal, we are seeking an individual with the knowledge and technical skills in molecular biology to design and prepare RNA constructs for high-throughput screening, in vitro assays and to support downstream in vivo studies. This role requires both prior experience and the desire to learn and develop as a scientist. We also value the ability to effectively contribute scientific ideas, participate in team discussions, maintain an organized and efficient lab space, and collaborate within a dynamic team to foster a healthy work environment. The successful candidate will work at the cutting-edge of vaccine discovery, which utilizes state-of-the-art instrumentation, automated robotic workflows, and artificial intelligence to ease suffering worldwide.

Qualifications:

  • B.A./B.S. in Biology, Molecular Biology, Immunology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related discipline with a minimum of 2 years of experience in an academic or industry lab

  • M.S. in Biology, Molecular Biology, Immunology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related discipline (with expected graduation by November 2024)

  • Proficiency of basic scientific principles and molecular biology including plasmid design, cloning, and site-directed mutagenesis.

  • Experience with standard molecular biology techniques (e.g. gel and capillary electrophoresis, binding assays, ELISA, RT-qPCR, chromatography, etc).

  • Able to maintain organized workspace and properly document experiments in an electronic notebook.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, both written and oral.

  • Self-starter with ability to work independently and multitask in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred:

  • Experience with RNA design, in vitro transcription and purification is preferred.

  • Experience with FPLC/HPLC chromatography (AKTA system) is preferred.

  • Experience with mammalian cell culture is preferred.

Responsibilities:

  • Molecular cloning

  • Design and prepare mRNA constructs for high-throughput screening.

  • Scale-up preparation of high-quality mRNAs for in vivo study.

  • Develop assays and perform quality assessments for mRNA production.

  • Collaborate closely and effectively with scientists on the team to understand project requirements. Properly document and effectively communicate results.

  • Design experiments, interpret and track results, and utilize findings for assay development and optimization.

  • Maintain accurate lab records and inventory management.

  • Effectively utilize available databases for sample tracking and data/results management.
