Merck Associate Director, Technical Project Management in West Point, Pennsylvania

Job Description

Overview:

The Associate Director, Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) plays a pivotal role in ensuring the successful execution of multiple capital projects related to Instrumentation and Control systems, particularly within the Human Health and our Company Research Laboratories facilities. This position is not only limited to U.S. projects but also includes the potential for remote support for international projects and occasional travel to overseas plant sites. The incumbent acts as a technical subject matter expert, fostering collaboration among various stakeholders, including business leadership, Global Engineering Solutions (GES), Digital Shop Floor Platform teams, and external contractors.

Key Responsibilities:

Collaboration with Stakeholders:

  • Partnering : Work closely with local business leaders and project teams to define the scope of instrumentation and control system hardware necessary for capital projects. This involves understanding the specific needs of each project and translating them into actionable requirements.

Review and Approval of Engineering Drawings:

  • Electrical/Loop Drawings : Critically review and approve electrical and loop drawings for Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) process and utility equipment. This includes assessing custom equipment skids and assessing stick-built instrumentation designed by Engineering Contractors.

Standards Education:

  • Automation Standards : Provide guidance and education to local project teams on automation standards. This encompasses technology selection, system configuration, validation practices, and the nuances of both hardware and software environments.

Liaison with Engineering Teams:

  • Close Collaboration : Maintain a close working relationship with GES engineers, Engineering Contractors, skid suppliers, and instrumentation vendors. This ensures alignment on project goals and adherence to engineering standards.

Factory Acceptance Testing Participation:

  • FAT Involvement : Actively participate in Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) at skid suppliers and OEMs as necessary. This may also involve conducting periodic Quality Assurance (QA) checks during the panel construction phase to ensure compliance with project standards.

Field Grounding Checks:

  • DeltaV Control Panels : Ensure that field grounding checks of DeltaV control panels are conducted prior to the power-up phase, which is crucial for system safety and reliability.

Loop Checks and Drawing Verification:

  • Automation IQ Testing Support : Assist with loop checks and verify drawings during Automation IQ testing as required for certain projects, ensuring that systems function as intended.

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Project Team Meetings : Engage with project stakeholders at all levels, demonstrating active participation in project team meetings. This involves effectively communicating project updates and addressing any concerns that may arise.

Adherence to Engineering Standards:

  • Engineering Standards : Ensure that all projects comply with our Company’s engineering standards and guidelines, which include industry best practices and regulatory compliance.

By fulfilling these responsibilities, the Associate Director, Instrumentation and Controls plays a crucial role in the successful delivery of capital projects, ensuring that they meet the necessary technological requirements and qualification standards while fostering cross-functional collaboration within the organization.

Education minimum requirement:

  • BS in Engineering, Computer Science, or other technical degree

  • Minimum 7 years of experience

  • Ability to travel up to 25%; local and overnights required

U.S. Hybrid Work Model

The Company is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the salary range for this job in certain states and cities within the United States. Final determinations with respect to salary will take into account a number of factors, which may include, but not be limited to the primary work location and the chosen candidate’s relevant skills, experience, and education.

Expected US salary range:

$139,600.00 - $219,700.00
