I - $19.72 - $28.14

II - $20.73 - $29.57

III - $21.79 - $31.07

Schedule: four 10-hour shifts, 7:00am - 5:30pm. Off Friday or Monday.

SUMMARY

Under immediate supervision, to perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties involved in the construction and maintenance of parks, park buildings, equipment, tools, and facilities.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May exercise supervision over seasonal staff.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Perform the full range of skilled and semi-skilled turf maintenance duties; water, mow, weed, trim, aerate, renovate, and fertilize turf.
  • Perform the full range of shrub and flower bed maintenance; plant, water, fertilize, and maintain landscaped areas including bushes, trees, flowers, and shrubs; control weeds.
  • Trim and prune bushes, trees, and shrubs to provide clearance of sidewalks and signs, as well as to ensure the continued health of the bush, tree, or shrub.
  • Perform a variety of duties in the maintenance and repair of the irrigation system; change and adjust heads; perform irrigation system installation and maintenance projects.
  • Operate the full range of parks maintenance vehicles and equipment including dump trucks, mowers, edgers, blowers, tractors, loaders, and hand and power tools.
  • Maintain tools and equipment and perform preventive maintenance on equipment.
  • Maintain play equipment, picnic tables, barbecue pits, and other related parks equipment and facilities; install and repair playground equipment, fences, and other related parks equipment and facilities.
  • Perform pest control measures; measure, mix, and apply chemicals to trees, shrubs, grass, and flowers to control weeds, insects, and plant diseases.
  • Remove fallen trees, stumps, fallen limbs, and related debris resulting from storm damage and general conditions.
  • Identify maintenance needs and safety hazards; report needs to appropriate staff.
  • Paint park buildings; remove graffiti in parks and in other areas.
  • Rake leaves and clear debris from walks, fields, and other facilities; pick up trash.
  • Clean and maintain rest rooms; stock rest rooms with necessary supplies; repair toilets, urinals and faucets.
  • Operate chemical sprayer in assigned areas to abate weeds and maintain accurate records associated with that task.
  • Perform maintenance on athletic fields.
  • Assist in the set-up and removal of equipment needed for special events.
  • Work unconventional hours and be subject to 24 hour on-call as required for the City snow removal program or emergency operations.
  • Be on-call as part of the on-call rotation.
  • Inspect parks, athletic fields, and other parks facilities to perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs of playground and other recreational equipment or facilities to ensure proper operation and safety.
  • Deal courteously and professionally with the public in response to inquiries and complaints; provide information regarding rules and regulations of the parks and other facilities.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High school diploma or GED.

*PARKS MAINTENANCE WORKER I *Experience: One year of parks maintenance or construction experience.

Certifications/Licenses:

  • Valid Utah Driver's License
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, Utah commercial driver's license within six months of employment in the position.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, Cer tified Pool Operator, Traffic Control Flagger, Forklift, and First Aid/CPR certificates; and completion of snow removal simulator training within 12 months of employment.

*PARKS MAINTENANCE WORKER II *Experience: Two years of parks maintenance experience.

Certifications/Licenses:

  • Valid Utah Driver's License
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, Utah commercial driver's license within six months of employment in the position.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, Certified Pool Operator, Traffic Control Flagger, Forklift, and First Aid/CPR certificates; and completion of snow removal simulator training within 12 months of employment.
  • Possession of Utah pesticide applicator license, Confined Space certificate and completion of 10-hour OSHA Safety training.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Methods, techniques, and tools used in the construction and maintenance of parks, landscaped areas, and related facilities.
  • Uses, purposes and operating characteristics of basic parks maintenance and general construction tools and equipment.
  • Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Diseases and pests that are harmful to plants.
  • Chemical pesticides and herbicides and their use.
  • Operating characteristics and repair principles used on irrigation systems.
  • Watering requirements for lawns, trees and plants and various types of soil.
  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to parks maintenance work.
  • Safe driving principles and practices.

Skill with:

  • Operating a variety of mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Using, operating, and maintaining chemical spraying equipment in performance of chemical spraying duties.
  • Using and operating hand tools, mechanical equipment, and power tools and equipment. • Performing heavy manual labor for extended periods of time in all types of weather.
  • Operating a motor vehicle safely.

Ability to:

  • Perform park maintenance, landscaping, reconstruction, and repair work.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on equipment.
  • Read, interpret, and apply a wide variety of technical information from manuals, drawings, specifications, layouts, blueprints, and schematics.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Work unconventional hours and be subject to 24-hour call as required for the City snow removal program or emergency operations.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Learn City policies, procedures and codes related to parks maintenanc e.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Ability to sit, stand, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, reach, crawl, twist, climb, and lift 50 lbs.; exposure to inclement weather, noise, outdoors, confining workspace, chemicals, dust, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards; ability to travel to different sites and locations. Ability to stand, walk or sit uncomfortably for extended periods.
