    JOB SUMMARY

    Maintains and repairs gas and diesel engines. Fabricates special equipment for unique needs.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Two (2) years of closely related experience; OR an equivalent combination of related education and experience.

    A valid Driver’s License issued by the State of Utah is required at time of hire.

    Must possess a current Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) Medical Card at the time of hire.

    Must possess a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of hire date.

    Must receive a verified negative test result on a mandatory drug test before starting in this position. Will be subject to random alcohol and drug testing. May be subject to post accident and reasonable suspicion alcohol and drug testing.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    The following duties and responsibilities are intended to be representative of the work performed by the incumbent(s) in this position and are not all-inclusive. The omission of specific duties and responsibilities will not preclude it from the position.

    Applicants must be prepared to demonstrate the ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.

  • Inspects, tests, and diagnoses power equipment for mechanical performance and/or malfunction.

  • Removes, disassembles/reassembles, adjusts, and/or replaces defective parts using proper tools and instruments.

  • Establishes a preventative maintenance program, in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications, for all vehicles and equipment. Maintains and submits appropriate documents upon completion of the program, in accordance with standard procedures and guidelines.

  • Responds to emergency calls on a 24-hour basis to solve mechanical problems and/or break-downs.

  • Compiles, monitors, and submits inventory lists of equipment, supplies, tools, and parts.

  • Utilizes trade skills to provide maintenance, repair, and fabrication to specialized equipment and structures. Provides special instructions of repaired/rebuilt/modified/fabricated equipment regarding the unique features and potential limitations on its use as a result of the specialized work performed on it.

  • Assists in the annual fleet set-up and utilizes specialized skills in making unique set-up configurations and vehicle/equipment modifications

  • Employs safe work practices following applicable safety measures, policies, and rules.

  • Maintains records on all maintenance, repair, modification, and fabrication done on vehicles, equipment, machinery, and facilities.

  • Submits appropriate records and documents of all work completed at each facility for entry into the computerized cost and activity tracking system.

  • Coordinates and assists work functions with other skill trades.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    Knowledge of:

  • Methods, materials, tools and standard practices of the automotive mechanics trade

  • Principles and operation of internal combustion gasoline and diesel engines

  • Hazards and safety practices associated with the auto mechanics trade

  • Preventive maintenance techniques

  • General safety rules and regulations

  • Safe working procedures

  • Mechanical repair of parts and equipment

    Skills and Abilities to:

  • Read and interpret hydraulic and electrical schematic

  • Perform arc and mig welding

  • Follow both written and verbal instructions and procedures

  • Effectively apply general automotive mechanics principles to specific conditions

  • Correctly diagnose mechanical problems and malfunctions

  • Act and work independently

    WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    This position requires extensive physical labor (approximately 90% of the time): lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying objects over 50 pounds (occasionally up to 100 pounds with some assistance); kneeling, bending, and standing. The work may involve constant exposure to extreme weather conditions, dirt, dust, fumes, chemicals, smoke, and/or loud noises. Work is occasionally performed in confined spaces.
