Job Description Summary

• Join a world class technology team across CT/Digital/AW/Research to further build the momentum in this cutting edge space by contributing to the pipeline of technology and product development in a cross functional role combining Clinical, software, and System Design.

• The Senior Systems Engineer - Usability works in close collaboration with a cross-functional team of Engineers, UX Designers, UX Researchers, clinical application specialists, customers and users, product management, marketing, and field teams to optimize user and system interaction and help define and develop new product technologies to meet user needs. This position has a strong focus on Human Factors Engineering to drive significant design improvements in product user interfaces and will be responsible for human factors-based research, analysis, and testing. The Usability Engineer will set strategy and manage usability activities for large scale development projects that span across business and/or care areas and collaborate on user experience solutions.

• Collaborate with global engineers, marketing, clinical partners and luminaries to drive concept prove outs, advanced technology development, and risk retirements prior to new product program development. Lead feature designs/enhancements and assessments/optimization of clinical performance. Submit patent applications and scientific abstracts/publications. Deliver clinically relevant, differentiating feature content for upcoming CT scanner and Digital/AW product releases, addressing unmet clinical needs to further increase GE Healthcare’s leadership in CT imaging.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for understanding the interactions between humans and other elements of a system. Applies theory, principles, data, and methods within the engineering design process to assure proper interaction between products, systems, and processes and the people who use them. Human factors Engineering is also concerned with the "fit" between the user, equipment, and their environments; taking into account the user's capabilities and limitations, seeking to ensure that tasks, functions, information and the environment suit each user.

  • Define ‘design for usability’ acceptance criteria that will meet customer expectations. Drive usability evaluation of new features.

  • Work closely with users, customers, marketing, clinical applications and field personnel to understand key usability needs and develop metrics to quantify usability design.

  • Provide domain expertise by leading and participating in technical design reviews, technical discussions, and risk mitigation decisions with focus on evaluation of design of user workflows, interactions, and experiences based on user-centered design principles and customer needs.

  • Lead formative usability evaluations including developing study plans, scripts and reports during new product development.

  • Ensure product safety and quality by planning and executing summative usability studies.

  • Work with new product development core teams to lead usability engineering planning, execution, and usability-related program deliverables (Use analysis report, UFMEA and use-related risk analysis, Known Use Problems analysis, usability testing).

  • Shape the Experience Design usability roadmap. Engage with internal and external usability experts & capture cross-industry best practices.

  • Guide and coach less experienced Usability Engineers and/or UX Design Leads on Human Factors Engineering principles and methods and application to medical device design.

  • Drive Human Factors Engineering and user-centered design process improvements, develop and share best practices, and train others.

  • Define and lead usability strategy for complex platform and new product development projects including leadership influence, cross-functional and cross-business unit collaboration, and effective management of usability activities and deliverables.

  • Lead systems feature development and technical risk retirement with systems thinking, including product requirement definition, integration, and verification activities

  • Developing in-depth knowledge of a technical discipline. Uses prior experience and acquired technical expertise to execute policy/strategy. Supporting, coordinating and leading technical reviews.

  • Contribute to and shape system designs, and collaborate with marketing, clinical partners and luminaries for clinical application features.

  • Uses some level of judgment and has ability to propose different solutions outside of set parameters but with guidance. Uses prior experience and on-the-job training to solve straightforward tasks. Has access to technical skills and analytic thinking required to solve problems. May use multiple internal sources outside of own team to arrive at decisions.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Factors or “ “STEM” majors (Physics, Technology, Engineering and Math)

  • 5+ years relevant work experience

  • Broad exposure to HW/SW/Systems design, and technical depth in one or more engineering disciplines (Electrical, Mechanical, Software, Usability, etc) and/or in Physics/Math.

  • Proven ability to develop timely and effective solutions for challenging design problems

  • Effective communication skills - ability to present ideas clearly and concisely

  • Demonstrated ability to pursue tasks to completion

Desired Characteristics

  • Master’s/PhD in Human Factors or “STEM” majors (Physics, Technology, Engineering and Math)

  • Strong oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve problems. Ability to document, plan, market, and execute projects. Established project management skills.

  • Experience in applying usability/human factors engineering and/or user interface design for medical devices

  • Proficient in the use of software tools for analysis, mock up and design

  • Experience with research collaborations

  • Proficient in the use of software tools for analysis and simulation (MATLAB, Python, SysML, Simulink)

  • Proficiency in Java/C/C++ programming language

  • Self-starter, energizing, results oriented, and able to multi-task

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative, matrixed, and customer focused environment

  • Excellent communication, influencing skills and ability to gain buy-in for initiatives

  • Strong project management skills including project planning, resource planning, stakeholder management, risk management, and change management.

  • Ability to influence to senior business leadership on usability and design strategy including product and portfolio decisions.
