Research Technician/Lab Manager - Department of Chemistry - Georgetown University College of Arts & Sciences

Our Department of Chemistry (https://chemistry.georgetown.edu/) is a student-centered department rooted in research that strives to provide exceptional education and training for both graduate and undergraduate students in an environment of outstanding scholarship expected at a top university. With a community of 22 research-active and instructional faculty, approximately 75 Ph.D. students, postdocs and research scientists, and 85 undergraduate Chemistry and Biochemistry majors, this is a great place to pursue knowledge at the forefront of modern chemical sciences.

Job Overview

The core research areas in the Biochemistry Laboratory of Dr. Esther Braselmann (https://chemistry.georgetown.edu/esther-braselmann/) include molecular biology, tissue culture and fluorescence microscopy.

Performing duties in close coordination with Dr. Braselmann, the Research Technician/Lab Manager supports the research program through both lab management and task performance in responsibilities that include but are not limited to:

  • Perform experiments and execute independent research

  • Train students in common techniques

  • Oversee onboarding of students in the lab

  • Train students in common techniques

  • Support students in day-to-day trouble shooting of common techniques

  • Maintain existing safety protocols, maintain records of student training, and maintain protocols and lab procedures

  • Ensure inventories of research outcomes are up-to-date (data organization, fridge/freezer organization and inventory)

  • Oversee and coordinate access to common equipment

  • Order materials

  • Maintain inventories and databases

  • Ensure that safety procedures are up-to-date

  • Serve as the primary contact for vendors and suppliers

The research goals will be identified and designed in close consultation with Dr. Braselmann and will advance the broad research direction of all lab members.

Work Interactions

Reporting directly to Dr. Braselmann, the Research Technician/Lab Manager works closely and collaboratively with students - supporting a lab core of the involvement of students at all levels in the research program.

As well, they interact frequently with members of other labs in the Chemistry department - often regarding research equipment, which is shared; serve as the primary contact with vendors and suppliers; and interact with our Office of Environmental Health & Safety.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • A college / B.A. degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry or a related field

  • Experience in a research laboratory setting in the field of biochemistry or a related field

  • Experience in leadership - demonstrable in different ways, such as hands-on mentoring, training other researchers in techniques, and/or developing protocols and procedures that other researchers execute

Preferred Qualifications

  • Long term interest in this particular work

  • Two years of research experience in the laboratory setting

  • Experience in microscopy and image processing

  • Experience in laboratory management - in particular, molecular cloning, tissue culture, and general biochemistry techniques
