Responsibilities If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for performing a variety of complex paralegal assignments handling white collar and/or cybercrime investigations, civil rights offenses, including color of law violations, federal hate crimes, small frauds, small quantity drug offenses, firearms offenses, Hobbs Act robberies, bank robberies, threats, immigration offenses, child exploitation/pornography and human trafficking within the Criminal Division of the United States Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia. Typical work assignments will include: Provides direct paralegal assistance to attorneys handling sensitive matters in support of the mission and function of the Criminal Division. Conducts complex legal research and analysis, and summarizing relevant legal precedents for applicability to assigned cases. Prepares, organizes, indexes, and maintains discovery productions in assigned cases. Provides in-courtroom presentation of exhibits and trial support. Prepares and files investigative legal process, including subpoenas, search warrants, and non-disclosure orders. Prepares exhibits for trial, which typically involve a wide range of visual materials including charts, diagrams, photographs and models. Participates in interviews with agents and potential witnesses to assist Attorneys in preparation for grand jury or trial. Performing other related duties as assigned. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications To be eligible at the GS-11 level, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions, as defined below: Specialized Experience, OR Education, OR a combination of Education and Experience. Specialized Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-9 level work. Specialized experience is defined as experience that has equipped you with the competencies needed to perform the job duties. Examples of such experience are: providing legal administrative and technical support to attorneys handling white collar and/or cybercrime, small fraud, small quantity drug offense or firearms offense investigations and prosecutions; conducting legal research concerning precedents and past court decisions; preparing evidence and exhibits, and recommendations; preparing legal documents, including motions, search warrants, arrest warrants, and documentation relevant to other actions related to the acquisition of evidence and/or testimony for criminal investigations; preparing grand jury and trial subpoenas, attachments to subpoenas and other technical documents; drafting documents for review and providing in-courtroom presentation of exhibits and trial support. OR Education: One of the following types of education in a related field: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree: OR 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree OR LL.M., if related. Education at the graduate level must be in an accredited college or university. OR Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. In order to qualify based on a combination, a combination of specialized experience and graduate-level education as described above, which when combined equal 100% of the requirements. To calculate your percentage of graduate education, first determine the total number of graduate hours then divide the total number of your graduate semester hours by 18 (or your school's definition of one year of graduate study). To calculate your percentage of qualifying experience, divide your total number of months of qualifying experience by 12. Now, add the two percentages together. The sum of the percentages must equal at least 100%. (Only graduate education in excess of the 2 full years may be used in this calculation.) Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
