Smithsonian Institution General Maintenance & Operations Supervisor in Washington, District Of Columbia

Summary The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in the Office of Facilities Management and Reliability (OFMR) provides the Smithsonian Institution with a full range of building services through maintenance and operational zones. Responsibilities The General Maintenance & Operations Supervisor performs a dual role involving both managerial and supervisory responsibilities. Managerial responsibilities cover activities both within the Shop and as a participant in and contributor to the overall management. The supervisory responsibilities involve the technical leadership and direction of a staff of various trades and skills, including but not limited to HVAC, electrical, welding, pipefitting, carpentry, framing, wood crafting, painting, and masonry. In this position, you will: Act as a principal advisor to the Zone Manager on maintenance operations involving the metals, electrical, paint, woodcraft, and HAVC Shop’s responsibilities for painting, machining, carpentry, and masonry. Plan, direct and monitor the work of 10-15 subordinate with journeyman skills who are responsible for general construction and remodeling, restoration of interior and exterior structures. Establish deadlines and priorities on the basis of work schedules, methodologies and governing policies. Maintain close contact with customers, responds promptly to their inquiries and checks periodically with them to determine their degree of satisfaction with the quality of work being performed; meet with customers at the conclusion of the project to determine degree of satisfaction with the finished product and the processes that interface with customers. Conditions of Employment Physical Requirements: This position requires the physical ability to perform moderately heavy work including lifting and carrying heavy objects up to 50 lbs.; work outside in all weather conditions with exposure to dirt, dust, pollen and insects; climb ladders and stairs; and stand and walk for extended periods. Employee may be required to work late shifts, weekends and holidays and is subject to being called in for emergencies to restore the Smithsonian Institution to normal operations Qualifications In order to be rated qualified, an applicant's overall experience and training must indicate possession of the minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform the duties of this position. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education Additional Information This position is not included in the bargaining unit.
