A key member of the J.D. advising team, the Director of Academic Advising has a strong understanding of Georgetown Law’s academic policies, degree requirements, and our unrivaled curriculum, including our extensive experiential learning courses. The Director has special responsibility for advising and programming J.D. transfer students, students approved to visit away, and students visiting to Georgetown Law from other law schools. Reporting directly to the Executive Director for Advising Services as part of the J.D. advising team in the Office of Academic Affairs, duties include but are not limited to:

Advising & Program Administration

  • Provide academic advising and support for J.D. students.

  • Develop familiarity with Law Center resources, policies, curriculum, and graduation requirements, including understanding where those policies differ from other schools’ policies and practices and advising transfer/visiting students accordingly.

  • Assist students experiencing academic difficulties and other challenges and provide effective referrals to campus resources, maintaining confidential and accurate student files.

  • Oversee the process of evaluating and accepting incoming transfer student academic credit in consultation with the faculty and the Office of the Registrar.

  • Oversee the Transfer Student Peer Mentor program, including interviewing, hiring, training, and supervising Transfer Student Peer Mentors.

  • Oversee visiting away student registration and progress toward degree and communicate appropriately with Office of the Registrar regarding transfer of credits, maintaining the Visiting Away Policies and Procedures.

Programming and Events

  • Organize and execute the Transfer Student Orientation and welcome for visiting J.D. students in coordination with the Office of Student Life.

  • Prepare and deliver Information Sessions on Academic Planning and Course Selection for transfer students, routinely communicating with students about programs, events, and activities.

  • Develop programmatic enhancements to best meet student needs, including coordinating with Careers teams to develop events, programs, and resources.

Compliance and Assessment

  • Maintain familiarity with ABA, New York Bar, and institutional standards for learning outcomes, credit hour calculation, and degree requirements as they apply to transfer students, visiting students, and students approved to visit away.

  • Regularly assess the impact of programming and resource needs for transfer students, visiting students, and students approved to visit away.

  • Provide guidance to Office of Admissions on applicable considerations for transfer admissions.

  • Serve as backup to other advising team specialties, including joint degree, concurrent degree, and evening student policies, and on Law Center Committees as needed.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • J.D.

  • 3 years of legal experience or equivalent experience

  • Superior written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills and a record of academic success

  • Must have careful attention to detail and the ability to be a thoughtful and creative problem solver while working with various constituencies within the Law Center and the University

  • Ability to juggle multiple competing priorities and meet firm deadlines

  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite

  • Previous experience in higher education and/or academic counseling preferred

  • Experience with databases is helpful

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

$66,783.00 - $126,720.23

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
