Certified career coaches work individually to personalize each student’s search, guided by an innovative career curriculum, high-tech assessment and preparation tools, and access to top recruiters.

Job Overview

The Associate Director of the MBA Career Center is a key member of the McDonough Career Management team responsible for developing career management strategies and coaching students on their careers.

They manage the employer relationships, assist with the design of marketing strategies for a group of employers within specified Industry Segments, and contribute career advice and industry expertise to the development and delivery of value-added, client-focused career management services for the 550 full-time MBA students, 380 part-time MBA students.

The Associate Director supports the MBA admissions process through various prospective student career programming, working closely with McDonough School of Business faculty, staff, students, employers, alumni and other stakeholders who may influence the career path of the students.

Along with the MBA Career Center’s Career Advisors and student Peer Advisors, they serve as are functional and industry experts who provide career management advice to students and recruiting guidance to employers.

Supported by an Operations Coordinator, the Associate Director manages on-campus and virtual employer presentations, events, interviewing, and programming and – as do all Associate Directors – interact with the student Peer Advisors and MBA Student Organizations assigned within their respective industry practices.

The MBA Career Center has expertise in 14 Industry Sectors. These are aligned with student demand and are: Consulting, Consumer Goods & Retail, Energy & Clean Tech • Entertainment, Media & Sports, Entrepreneurship, Financial Services, Government, Healthcare, Hospitality, International Development, Manufacturing & Transportation, Not-for-Profit/Social Impact, Real Estate, and Technology

Focusing on international opportunities and management development programs, the Associate Director provides coaching to students whose focus is on a specific function vs. an industry or who are uncertain of their career focus. As well, they focus on all Corporate Functional areas within their assigned Industries - Consumer Packaged Goods/Retail; Hospitality; and Manufacturing/Transportation – and provide a functional focus on Marketing.

Work Interactions and Work Mode Designation

Reporting to an Assistant Dean, this Associate Director provides leadership and support to Industry Team members, and has have primary responsibility for external relationships and account management on behalf of career management.

As well, they may interact closely with other McDonough and GU faculty and administrators, alumni, employers, and McDonough Board members - and serve as key liaison between employers and students.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree - preference for Master’s degree in Business, Marketing, HR, Higher Education, Counseling or an equivalent degree

  • 5+ years in very polished, demanding corporate environment – preference for some of that experience with - or a strong knowledge of - higher education and/or experience within MBA recruiting process and management experience in a Human Resources environment

  • Extremely strong interpersonal communication abilities and strong team orientation

  • Strong skills in organization and creativity

  • High level of flexibility and innovation

  • Proven experience handling corporate and/university relationships

  • Proven leadership

  • Experience coaching and mentoring junior staff on professional development and career skills

  • Strong skills in strategy and innovation

  • Strong leadership, coaching/advising skills

  • Focus on holistic, systemic solutions

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-task environment with tight deadlines

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and deliver results by working with others

  • Significant experience/expertise in at least one of the industries/functions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Recruiting experience as a hiring manager or recruiting/HR professional

  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and understanding of general recruiting databases experience
