Bettcher Industries, Inc. Tool Maker Machinist I in Wakeman, Ohio

The Tool Maker Machinist I is expected to be highly skilled as well as personally motivated. Will work closely with the engineering team to develop processes to create products from concept to part. The ideal candidate must have a high degree of adaptability and troubleshooting skills, as well as an independent spirit that allows them to develop their own programs and processes with very little to no oversight. This position is also responsible for transferring knowledge of new processes to the production floor.

Essential Functions:

  • Sets and operates machining equipment with a high level of understanding of machining and metal removal concepts which may include milling, turning, grinding, drilling, tapping, de-burring, heat treating, basic welding, all bench operations and inspection.
  • Must be able to set-up and operate both manual and CNC machines.
  • Assist in the training and development of employees, as needed.
  • Correctly interprets CNC programs. This is to include the following: units of measure, positioning system, tools, spindle speeds, feed rates, canned cycles, coolant use, axis destination movements, tool movements, and end of program code.
  • Detects and reports defective materials or questionable conditions to the department supervisor.
  • Reworks production parts and performs emergency rework and/or modification of production parts as directed.
  • Observes operation of machine and verifies conformance of machined work pieces to specifications using measuring instruments such as fixed gauges, calipers and micrometers.
  • Uses and sets complex gages.
  • Maintains the work area and equipment in a clean orderly condition and follows prescribed safety regulations.
  • Works on projects as part of a team, exchanging ideas and contributing skills that complement those of the other team members. Fulfills commitments to team members.
  • Reads and interprets work instructions for product specifications, dimensions, tolerances, and tooling instructions.
  • Identifies opportunities for process improvements.
  • Assists in the machining of redesigned existing products.
  • Works directly with Engineering to produce new products or existing products.
  • Orders material and tooling for projects.
  • Designs and creates fixtures, lays out processes, and writes programs to produce parts requested by Engineers.
  • Submits engineering change requests to Engineers.
  • Receives repaired tooling when returned and ensures it was properly fixed. Tracks tooling repairs to evaluate turnaround time and cost.
  • Examine standard or previously used dies, tool, jigs, fixtures and, machinery components and recommends design changes.
  • Set-Up parts according to set-up sheet, blueprint, etc., and make machine adjustments &/or tool settings. Troubleshoots issues and executes correction(s).

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED required / technical schooling preferred.
  • Preferred 7+ years of experience in manufacturing machining.
  • Must meet all the qualification standards requirements of level 3 Machinist (internal applicants only).
  • Must be able to troubleshoot equipment & identify tooling issues such as worn tooling and tool holders.

  • Ability to share acquired knowledge and experience and mentor other Machinists.
