“Only temporary or permanent NCDOT Employees or layoff candidates with the NC Department of Transportation eligible for RIF priority reemployment consideration as described by GS 126May Apply”

The Work Zone Traffic Control Section within the Traffic Management Unit of the Transportation Mobility and Safety Division is seeking a mid-level engineer to assist in the design of in-house Transportation Management Plans (TMPs) and review of consultant submitted TMPs for State Transportation Improvement Projects. TMPs are mandatory on all Federally funded highway improvement projects by the Federal Highway Administration and are required to provide a contractor a design which manages motor vehicular, cyclist, and pedestrian traffic during construction operations. As an extension of this directive, the North Carolina Department of Transportation also requires a TMP for all state-funded highway construction projects to accomplish the same goals of safety and mobility in all highway construction zones. In addition, the Work Zone Traffic Control Section is responsible for writing and updating all statewide policies, procedures and specifications for the use and application of traffic control devices on all NCDOT maintained roads and the person hired for this position will assist with that writing and updating. The successful candidate in this position should have a general working knowledge of roadway construction and traffic engineering and the ability to analyze roadway, structural, and drainage plans. Using this information, along with traffic data, the candidate should be able to develop a traffic management strategy which will enable the project to be constructed safely, efficiently, and economically. The candidate should also have experience working with CADD software and Microsoft Office products, specifically Excel and Word. Additional job tasks that may require overnight travel include attending field inspections and meetings at construction sites/field offices, and conducting safety audits of active work zones

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:
