This professor position requires: 1) designing and developing nanomaterials to address biomedical and environmental challenges; 2) designing and developing training and instructional materials for project team members; and 3) teaching and developing courses for TAMIU’s BS Chemistry program. The project’s objective is to covalently functionalize MXene which will include the preparation of various functionalized polymers and block-copolymers, polymer characterization, and spectroscopic studies.

The successful candidate must have 1) a PhD in Chemistry or closely related fields at the time of appointment; 2) some experience in polymer synthesis, characterization; and 3) application in sensing, energy storage, and thermomechanical properties.

Duties: Duties that come with the position include the following:

  • Conduct wet lab experiments, including setting up solid phase organic synthesis. Characterize organo-peptides using HPLC, LCMS, and NMR.

  • Design, organize, and conduct research in the field of covalent functionalization of nanomaterials (MXenes)

  • Collect, interpret, and analyze spectroscopic data and summarize findings,

  • Covalent functionalization of nanomaterials using amide chemistry,

  • Nanocomposite formulation and thermo-mechanical characteristic tests and applications.

  • Teach 6 SCH (3-Fall and 3-Spring semesters)

  • Prepare technical documentations and reports pertaining to research activities and experiments,

  • Write research manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals,

  • Present results and finding at conferences,

  • Write proposals for external funding,

  • Provide guidance and research mentoring to graduate and undergraduate students,

  • Design training and instructional materials including courses that apply materials, knowledge, and data from the research project, and

  • Ensure research integrity and compliance of project activities and protocol with State and Federal regulations.

Preference will be given to candidates who have experience:

  • with drug delivery systems or stimuli-responsive polymers is preferred but not required,

  • conducting research on solid phase synthesis, and

  • publishing about nanomaterial and nanocomposite synthesis, characterization and applications.

Working Knowledge and Skills:

Candidate must be familiar with standard and routine instruments such as FTIR, Raman, XRD, SEM, TEM, TGA, DSC, and Rheometer.

Application Process:

The first review of applications will be on September 13, 2024, and will continue until the position is filled. The completed employment application must include:
