What we want

The Veterinary Technician III, Large Animal ICU, under general supervision, provides for and supervises care and treatment of animals admitted to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Provides assistance to the professional staff, instructs veterinary students and staff in clinical techniques, and oversees the maintenance of the physical area within the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Associate degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science or a related area or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Four years of technical experience in a veterinary hospital or referral clinic environment.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Basic computer skills in word processing, spread sheets, and billing entry.

  • Working knowledge of veterinary equipment used within a veterinary teaching hospital such as anesthetic machines, fluid pumps, blood gas analyzers, oscilloscopes, defibrillators, nebulizers, and endoscopic equipment preferred.

  • Requires working alternate shifts, holidays, weekends, or “on-call duty”.

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

  • Must have exceptional customer service and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three years relevant experience within the Texas A&M University System.

  • Four or more years’ experience in an ICU veterinary medical setting.

  • One year of Leadership Experience.

  • Three years in a veterinary ICU, veterinary emergency department, or other college of veterinary medicine large animal department.

  • Outstanding Communication skills and ability to provide exceptional customer service.

  • A general understanding of the equipment used in a Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

Responsibilities:

  • Patient Care : Instructs students, and staff in proper clinical techniques to support patient care. Instructs / places peripheral, central, and arterial catheters. Performs urinary catheterization in male and female patients. Monitors patients to detect any change in their clinical status. Proficient in drug and constant rate infusion calculations and administration. Provides one-on-one nursing care to critical patients. Provides physical restraint for the safe handling of patients. Performs, assists, supervises, and instructs veterinary students in patient care, including administering fluid therapy, administering medications IM, IV, PO, Sub-Q, PR. Exercises patients. Keeps patients cleaned and groomed. Coordinates, performs, and assists with bandage changes. Administers and monitors patient diet as prescribed.

  • Advanced Technical Duties: Performs and supervises advanced technical skills for any services within the large animal hospital. Maintains availability to be called in to assist with difficult IV catheter placement, blood draws, down animals and other advanced technical skills as needed. Assists and instructs patient restraint & handling on initial examination, patient history, proper aseptic technique, and site preparation. Places & maintains IV catheters. Places nasogastric tubes. Performs and/or assists with collection of blood, urine, fecals, and other tissues. Monitors patient status (TPR, pain, mentation, etc.). Performs, assists, and instructs others, on advanced technical skills with all species admitted to the large animal hospital.

  • General Duties: Assures proper hospital information management: entering hospital fees and patient data into the hospital’s computer information system, ensuring all charges generated from treatments, procedures and supplies are correctly entered. Monitors and records physiological data into patient medical records. Records all medications given. Maintains hospital stall census. Maintains a sanitary and well-organized service within the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Restocks expendable supplies, drugs, and solutions. Maintains records of expendable supplies, drugs, and solutions.

  • Inventory Control and Administrative Duties: Reviews and updates policy and procedures for LA ICU. Maintains equipment, quality control, inventory control, acts as responsible party for performing regular preventative maintenance checks. Performs infection disease control procedures. Checks and inputs charges for ICU and other hospital patients. Performs other duties as assigned.
