Job Description Summary: This is a system administration position with Enterprise Core Services (ECS) and is responsible for the installation, maintenance, administration, troubleshooting, and enhancement of computing systems, operating systems, and other system software and hardware for EIP (Enterprise Infrastructure Platforms). This position will also work with NETS, OIS and other system administrators throughout the organization. The position will be responsible for the maintenance and troubleshooting of enterprise services such as DNS, DHCP, RADIUS, Google Workspace, and configuration management for Linux OS.

Work Location: This position is hybrid, requiring at least three days in-person at our Boulder, CO locations (Mesa Lab and Foothills Labs). Regardless of flexible work arrangements, UCAR requires ALL positions to be performed within the U.S., excluding U.S. Territories.

What You Will Do

Here is a brief summary of what one would expect to be generally responsible for in this role.

User support (40%):

  • Works in conjunction with the EIP Google Admins team to provide Google Workspace support for users within UCAR and NCAR. Working with other sysadmins throughout UCAR and NCAR will provide support for DNS, DHCP, and RADIUS, including creating/modifying/deleting records for all three services. Collaborates and works closely with organization-wide configuration management engineering teams to develop, document, and implement solutions and tools to manage linux systems at scale using Ansible including writing playbooks and documentation for those procedures. Consults with users regarding problems that have been escalated by NUSD to Tier 3 support. Investigates and solves operating system or hardware level problems independently. Assists users in defining and implementing special applications and hardware requirements.

​General Systems Administration (40%):

  • Works with tools such as InfoBlox, Ansible, and Google Workspace Admin console and GAM to provide backend support for enterprise services including updating operating systems, installing and upgrading hardware, and managing Linux OS with a primary focus on AlmaLinux 8 and 9. Creates processes that automate routine tasks. Is an active contributor to group discussions regarding the direction of computer systems and support and may lead smaller technical teams. Investigate new cloud computing technologies relative to systems management.

    Research new hardware and software products to improve EIP computing and systems administration tasks. Makes recommendations on solutions and best practices. ​(10%)

    Creates and maintains on-line documentation about the computing environment that targets both users, NUSD, and other systems administrators. (10%)

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in computer-related field and progressive relevant experience, which is typically gained by four to eight years of experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

REQUIRED:

  • Strong customer service skills and ability to work effectively with a variety of people.

  • Demonstrated understanding and experience with Linux OS systems administration.

  • Demonstrated understanding of Ansible.

  • Skill and knowledge in enterprise software support platforms.

  • Skilled in TCP/IP networking.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of server hardware

  • Demonstrated knowledge and skilled at addressing Linux OS security issues and best practices.

  • Ability to work in a team environment and communicate effectively with team members.

  • Research skills (emphasizing web research) for troubleshooting problems.

  • Ability to clearly convey complex, technical information and concepts to systems and network administrators.

  • Ability to determine when system changes will affect others and is able to mitigate consequences.

  • Familiarity with multi-user operating systems and system components (e.g., mail, printer services, network, file system network, security)

  • Demonstrated skill in following established procedures.

  • Demonstrated experience with programming languages.

  • Ability to work under time constraints and multi-task.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Working knowledge of Unix/Linux system administration procedures preferred.
