Job Description Summary: This is a system administration position with Enterprise Core Services (ECS) and is responsible for the installation, maintenance, administration, troubleshooting, and enhancement of computing systems, operating systems, and other system software and hardware. This individual will work directly with the Enterprise and Information Platforms (EIP) group within ECS, the NCAR/UCAR Service Desk (NUSD), and other systems administrators throughout the organization, and will be responsible for the development and documentation of procedures used for large scale management of operating systems and software installation, troubleshooting issues escalated from NUSD, and working with organization-wide configuration management teams to support Microsoft Windows, Apple macOS, and Linuxb workstation computers.

Work Location: This position is hybrid, requiring at least three days in-person at our Boulder, CO locations (Mesa Lab and Foothills Labs). Regardless of flexible work arrangements, UCAR requires ALL positions to be performed within the U.S., excluding U.S. Territories.

What You Will Do

Here is a brief summary of what one would expect to be generally responsible for in this role.

User support (40%):

  • Works in conjunction with NUSD to provide daily support for users in a heterogeneous environment consisting of Apple, Microsoft, and Linux systems. Collaborates and works closely with organization-wide configuration management engineering teams to develop, document, and implement solutions and tools to manage desktop systems at scale and to train NUSD in those procedures. Consults with users regarding problems that have been escalated by NUSD. Investigates and solves operating system or hardware level problems independently. Assists users in defining and implementing special applications and hardware requirements.

​General Systems Administration (40%):

  • Works with tools such as JAMF Pro, MECM, Intune, and Ansible to automate desktop installations and management with a primary focus on Apple hardware and macOS. Creates processes that automate routine tasks. Is an active contributor to group discussions regarding the direction of computer systems and support and may lead smaller technical teams. Manages the yearly bulk computer deployment. Develops and maintains inventory management processes. Communicates with vendors regarding software licensing or hardware. Investigate new cloud computing technologies relative to systems management. Manages backup technologies and assists with deployment strategies.

Research new hardware and software products to improve end user computing and systems administration tasks (10%).

Makes recommendations on solutions and best practices. Creates and maintains on-line documentation about the computing environment that targets users, NUSD, and other systems administrators (10%).

  • Bachelor's degree in computer-related field and progressive relevant experience, which is typically gained by four to eight years

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

REQUIRED:

  • Strong customer service skills and ability to work effectively with a variety of people.

  • Complete understanding and experience of Apple macOS systems administration.

  • Complete understanding of JAMF Pro

  • Skill and knowledge in enterprise software support platforms.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

  • Demonstrated knowledge Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager, Intune..

  • Skilled in TCP/IP networking.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of PC hardware

  • Demonstrated knowledge and skilled at addressing macOS security issues and best practices.

  • Ability to work in a team environment and communicate effectively with team members.

DESIRED, BUT NOT REQUIRED:

  • Apple Certified Technician

  • 1-2 years’ experience in systems administration in a networked computing environment.

  • Experience with bulk purchase and acquisition of systems.
