Description and Functions

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department seeks a Wildlife Biologist based in Casper, WY. This position will coordinate collecting and analyzing wildlife population data for use in setting hunting seasons, identifying seasonally important habitats for all wildlife, and identifying or mitigating environmental impacts. This position will collect data by both ground and aerial methods (helicopter or small single-engine fixed-wing aircraft). Will coordinate with internal and external cooperators and conduct wildlife habitat evaluations. Will be responsible for end-of-year reports. This position will have an extensive presence in the field, particularly during hunting seasons, and have effective working relationships with other Game and Fish employees, other state and federal agency personnel, local landowners, sportspersons, and non-governmental organizations. Will be assigned to monitor and track budgets to ensure that necessary data is collected within fiscal limits.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.

  • Coordination of data collection within the area of responsibility, including assigning and collaborating data collection efforts with coworkers. Represents the region on intra and interagency working groups.

  • Interact with the public and organized groups to provide wildlife management information, hunting season recommendations, and gather constituent feedback. Conduct public meetings with individual constituents and constituent groups. Analyze public input relative to wildlife management recommendations.

  • Coordinate district wildlife or habitat management efforts.

  • Handles nuisance wildlife, including relocation or euthanasia as required. Interacts with the public, providing information and resolving wildlife conflicts.

  • Coordinates management efforts with state and federal agencies and private landowners.

  • Represents the Department at intra and interagency meetings and correspondence to coordinate wildlife management in the region as directed.

  • Provides input and data to establish management goals and objectives; conducts field surveys and analyzes population and habitat data for wildlife.

  • Collect wildlife population data in diverse terrain and environmental conditions. Utilize all-terrain vehicles, horses, aircraft, snow machines, watercraft, 4-wheel drive pickups, and other equipment to collect wildlife information.

  • Gathers and compiles data into statistical information to meet requirements of periodic or other reports.

  • Compiles, edits, and disseminates reports and information.

  • Comments on the Wildlife Environmental Reviews to the Department's Habitat Protection Program at a senior biologist level.

  • Evaluates wildlife habitat/range conditions, collect data, and recommends management improvements or projects to improve wildlife habitat. Recommends actions for management decisions for managed lands based on public use analysis, wildlife data, wildlife habitat data, and issues brought forth by the Department and public.

  • Gathers and compiles data into statistical information to meet requirements of periodic or other reports.

  • Collects biological data for use in making recommendations for hunting and trapping seasons and other management decisions.

  • Conducts senior-level independent research and extensive analytical evaluations.

  • Follows all established rules and regulations when working on projects and responsibilities.

  • Utilize immobilization equipment and drugs to handle wildlife safely.

Qualifications

PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:

Preference may be given to those with a bachelor's degree in wildlife, habitat, range or watershed management, ecology or biology, plus four years of professional work experience in wildlife habitat, watershed, or rangeland management; Or a master's degree in wildlife habitat, range or watershed management, ecology, biology, Plus two years of professional work experience in wildlife habitat, watershed, or rangeland management.

**Must have a valid driver's license

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of the game and non-game mammalian wildlife management, data collection techniques, and conservation issues.

  • Knowledge of how to conduct a methodical examination.

  • Knowledge of how to find, gather, and collect information or data.

  • Knowledge of management, protection, propagation, and conservation of fish, wildlife, and habitat.

  • Knowledge of research methods, techniques, and/or sources of information.

  • Knowledge of agency, professional, and/or industry standards and practices.

  • Knowledge of native Wyoming plants and introduced plants for habitat work

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Bachelor's Degree (typically in Wildlife Management)

Experience:

1-2 years progressive work experience (typically in Wildlife Management) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Wildlife Biologist II

Education & Experience Substitution:

4-6 years of progressive work experience (typically in Wildlife Management) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Wildlife Biologist II

Necessary Special Requirements

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • The position requires the lifting of heavy objects and strenuous physical exertion at times.

  • Be able to work in various weather conditions and environments.

  • Must be able to work all days of the week and varied work hours, including weekends and early mornings, evenings/late nights.

  • Ability to safely operate motorized equipment, including 4x4 pickup trucks, ATVs, and snowmobiles.

NOTES:

  • FLSA: Exempt

  • Successful applicants for employment must pass a background check prior to appointment.

  • Must complete wildlife immobilization training and certification.
