Summary

The Remote Family Services Administrator on Call (FSAOC) will support the mission, vision, and values of We Are Sharing Hope SC (SHSC) by serving as a leader during their scheduled AOC shifts. The remote AOC will assume direct responsibility for Family Services decision-making on every donor referral made to SHSC during their assigned shift.

The Remote FSAOC will oversee the daily Family Services operations related to organ donation within SHSC’s donor service area. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to: staff deployment, resource utilization, communication with onsite staff, collaboration with other members of the SHSC team and external partners, ensuring that SHSC follows regulatory policies and procedures throughout each step of the donation process, and ensuring the successful outcome of every donor case on their assigned shift.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Three (3) 24-hour shifts per week, totaling 10-12 shifts per month.

  • The Remote FSAOC will make critical decisions regarding staffing, resource utilization, case management, and provide real-time constructive feedback and education to family services staff.

  • Ensures that all donor evaluations and organ cases comply with SHSC, CMS, OPTN/UNOS, AOPO, AATB, and CDC guidelines and recommendations.

  • Thoroughly knowledgeable of SHSC’s policies and procedures, ensuring they are followed on every referral/donation case.

  • Knowledgeable in brain death and AAN guidelines surrounding the pronouncement of brain death, enabling real-time review of brain death pronouncement/documentation during active donor cases.

  • Reviews documentation on referrals and donor cases in real-time for accuracy, including but not limited to: Authorization/Disclosure, AATB Uniform Donor Risk Assessment Interview, accurate brain death documentation, and other OPTN documentation requirements.

  • Oversees all logistical operations for organ donation cases during their assigned shift.

  • Provides direct support and guidance to onsite family services staff for handling new and difficult situations.

  • Collaborates with SHSC’s Clinical Services, Communications Center, Hospital Services, and Tissue Recovery teams.

  • Works with the Organ Administrator on Call (OAOC) to determine the optimal time to approach families for organ donation.

  • Coordinates with Hospital Services and each hospital’s Donation Program Manager to maintain good hospital relations and address hospital barriers in real-time during cases.

  • Assists with coroner communication and advocates for donation when needed.

  • Participates remotely in routine AOC meetings, staff meetings, and other meetings related to the FSAOC position.

  • Engages remotely in process improvement and data development projects, including case reviews and research opportunities.

  • Participates in local, regional, and national seminars on organ, eye, and tissue donation.

  • Travels to South Carolina twice a year for in-person FSAOC training.

  • Stays current on all OPTN policies and CMS regulations.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education:Bachelor’s degree required with experience and/or a combination of knowledge, education, training, and/or equivalent background as an OPO Family Service Coordinator.

Experience:Minimum of three (3) years of experience as an OPO Family Services Coordinator, preferably with at least two (2) years of FSAOC/team lead experience.

Computer Skills:Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Microsoft Outlook required. Experience with electronic medical records (e.g., Cerner, Epic, Meditech) preferred.

Other Requirements: Ability to fulfill on-call obligations; work up to 24 consecutive hours.
