Class Summary

Hiring Salary Range:

Camp Director: $18.00 - $20.00/hour (Based on Experience) Inclusion Counselor: $15.00 - $18.00/hour (Based on Experience) Camp Counselor: $15.00 - $16.00/hour (Based on Experience)

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

The Department of Community Services provides high-quality recreational, educational, human services, and other amenities in partnership with the Gwinnett community. It envisions a diverse, vibrant, and safe Gwinnett where residents are healthy and successful and seeks to partner with others to enhance the quality of life of families and individuals residing in Gwinnett County. The department provides programming at multiple locations across Gwinnett.

Camp Directors, Inclusion Counselors, and Camp Counselors are responsible for orienting, monitoring, and leading children through the day-to-day operations of summer camp; including the setup and cleanup of equipment and supplies for camp activities. Candidates must be comfortable working outdoors, effective communicators with children and adults, and able to transition groups of children effectively. Camp staff must enforce rules and regulations; ensure attendance and camp records are completed; provide first aid as needed; maintain equipment and inventory; and report/manage discipline problems, accidents, and other incidents.

Candidates must undergo a comprehensive background check and obtain a satisfactory determination from the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning (DECAL).

Specific responsibilities and minimum requirements for each position are listed below.

Please note that there will be several days of MANDATORY training required of staff during May 2024.

For Environmental and Heritage Center /CEC Locations, the mandatory training dates are May 11th, May 23rd & May 24th. The Camp Season runs from May 28 to August 2nd.

For Recreation Sites, the mandatory training dates are May 11th and May 28th to the 31st. The Camp Season runs from June 3rd to July 26th.

The Grade for these positions is 97.

Camp Directors will be responsible for:

  • Communicating all issues and concerns with the Program Supervisor

  • Developing and implementing lesson plans

  • Leading children and counselors through the day-to-day operation of the camp, including set up and clean-up of equipment and supplies for camp activities

  • Monitoring camp staff work hours and completing and submitting time sheets. Monitors attendance

  • Orienting, monitoring, and leading children in various activities

  • Participating in staff and program evaluation

  • Supervising and leading various activities, games, and crafts for campers

  • Supervising camp staff, interacting with parents, and paperwork completion, including weekly reports

Inclusion Counselors will be responsible for the following:

  • Communicating all issues and concerns to the Program Supervisor

  • Interacting with parents and paperwork completion, including weekly reports

  • Leading children through the day-to-day operation of camp, including set up and clean-up of equipment and supplies for camp activities

  • Maintaining confidentiality of parents, children, and staff

  • Maintaining equipment and inventory

  • Orienting, monitoring, and leading children in various activities

  • Supervising and leading various activities, games, and crafts for campers

  • Working directly with campers who have physical and/or cognitive disabilities

  • Ability to determine accommodations and communicate adjustments with other camp staff

  • Previous experience working in a day camp setting or teaching children with special needs is preferred

    Camp Counselors will be responsible for the following:

  • Communicating all issues with the Camp Director and Program Supervisor

  • Helping to develop and implement lesson plans

  • Leading children through the day-to-day operation of camp, including set up and clean-up of equipment and supplies for camp activities

  • Leading various activities, games, and crafts for campers

  • Maintaining equipment and inventory

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Camp Counselors

  • Must be at least 16 years old;

  • CPR and First Aid certification is required before the first day of camp;

  • Previous experience working in a day camp setting or teaching children is preferred;

  • Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills;

  • Effective communicator with children and adults;

  • Ability to transition groups of children effectively.

Camp Inclusion Counselor

  • Must be at least 18 years old;

  • Valid Georgia Driver's License;

  • Previous experience working in a day camp setting or teaching children with special needs, or college coursework in special education or related fields;

  • CPR and First Aid certification is required before the first day of camp;

  • Previous experience working in a day camp setting or teaching children is preferred;

  • Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills;

  • Effective communicator with children and adults;

  • Ability to transition groups of children effectively.

Camp Director

  • Must be at least 18 years old;

  • Must possess a valid Georgia Driver’s License;

  • Previous experience working in a day camp setting or teaching children;

  • College level course work in recreation, health and wellness, elementary/secondary education, or a similar field of study is required;

  • Must have supervisory experience;

  • Experience or formal education of techniques employed in working with special needs specifically behaviorally challenged populations preferred;

  • CPR and First Aid certification is required before the first day of camp;

  • Previous experience working in a day camp setting or teaching children is preferred;

  • Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills;

  • Effective communicator with children and adults;

  • Ability to transition groups of children effectively.

Physical Requirements:

The work involves direct involvement with day camp participants which typically requires bending, crouching, stooping, standing for long periods, considerable walking, and may require intermittent lifting of objects of a minimum of 25 pounds. The work is performed indoors and outdoors in all kinds of weather.

Part-time positions are only offered medical benefits if they work over an average of 29 hours a week for at least a year.
