What we want

The Library Associate I is responsible for serving as the initial information point of contact for Galveston library clients, whether in person, online/virtual, or by telephone. Provides advanced frontline user assistance in circulation, reference information, and document delivery services. Instructs and informs users on the variety of available tools and their use. Serves as the library staff liaison to the Texas A&M University - Galveston campus in collaboration with the Galveston librarians. Supervises student employees. The position would be Monday - Thursday 3PM - 1AM. Must be able to adjust schedule on an occasional basis to help cover during extended hours or in the event of an emergency. Must be able to work early evenings or days during periods between academic semesters.

Location: The employee will be located at the TAMU Galveston library.

Required Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Seven years of experience in a public, academic or specialized library or archive.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

  • Ability to lift or move light to medium weight boxes, books, or similar items, push a heavy book truck.

  • Ability to handle material which can contain dust or microscopic mold spores.

  • Knowledge of email, word processing, spreadsheets, and complex library online resource searches and/or processing.

  • Thorough knowledge of library functions and expert knowledge of unit functions.

  • Ability to be customer service oriented is essential.

  • Ability to adapt to a changing working environment.

  • Attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Strong communications, planning, and interpersonal skills.

Essential Duties/Tasks:

  • College Station Collaboration/Site Processing - Collaborates with appropriate College Station and Galveston librarians to manage and maintain circulation workflows, course reserves collections, technology check-out, interlibrary loan requests, and borrowing policies. Maintains daily operational workflows in library technology platforms for circulation, course reserves, interlibrary loan, and space reservations. Works collaboratively with appropriate parties based in College Station to ensure consistent and effective delivery of library services and resources. Serves as a resource person for Galveston library student employees.

  • Library Service Contact - Acts as initial information point at the library on the Galveston campus. Provides advanced circulation assistance. Keeps daily statistics on number and types of client inquiries. Provides advanced assistance on a variety of electronic and print information sources available throughout the library. Uses advances reference tools and databases to answer users' questions and refers patrons to the librarians for professional research needs. Interprets, explains, applies, and enforces library policies. Communicates with faculty, staff, and students, and utilizes advanced skills to answer their information needs in person, online, and by phone. Provides student referrals to campus partners. Ensures safety and emergency procedures are followed in the library. Communicates safety or facility issues and office supply or equipment needs to appropriate campus departments. Resolves equipment and related technical problems.

  • Student Supervising Duties - Post jobs in Jobs for Aggies, reviews applications, schedules interviews, and coordinates the hiring process for new student employees. Approves timesheets and evaluates student employees. Oversees and trains student employees for the unit.

  • Teamwork and Remote Location Liaison - Communicates regularly with appropriate library units at the College Station libraries and people located at regional sites with regards to library resources and services. Participates in meetings and provides feedback on services needed for assigned locations. Communicates with AskUs Director and related library administrators in the University Libraries regarding library usage and space, and any problem-solving needs. Works with Galveston librarians to represent the library. Participates in location specific student events and introduces basic library services to patrons and prospective students. Finda and recommends opportunities to improve services and the library at the Galveston location. Performs other duties as assigned.
