Responsibilities Supervises and provides direction and guidance to Federal Wage System employees. Responsible for the supervision and management of assigned fleet and all heavy equipment within the District. Supervises a crew in equipment replacement, preventative maintenance, new construction, and reoccurring work for road surface repairs. Supervises vehicle and equipment repair and preventative maintenance activities for a fleet of vehicles and heavy equipment. Leads a workforce in the techniques and procedures involved in operating heavy equipment such as large excavators, graders, bulldozers, skid steers, front end loaders, backhoes, medium and heavy-duty trucks, and dump trucks. In cooperation with supervisor, plans, directs, and coordinates construction and maintenance improvement projects for the District. Assists in meetings with Field Managers and engineers to discuss needs and set priorities. Coordinates with counties and with District resource specialists on special projects and cooperative activities. Physical Demands: Heavy physical effort is required for constant climbing in and out of different machines and pushing and pulling levers continuously while machine is in operation. Work is strenuous because of the large equipment operated, the adjustments made, and the adverse operating conditions. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jerking and jolting from operating over rough surfaces. The incumbent is required to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds and often puts forth similar effort when pushing, pulling, turning, and positioning parts, assemblies, equipment, and tools. Incumbent is required to manipulate hand and foot controls while changing attachments. Incumbent must maintain a high degree of concentration, alertness and depth perception to perform operation to grade the surface. Work is physically and mentally challenging. Work Environment: The operation of large and complicated gasoline or diesel-powered engineering and construction equipment in difficult circumstances increases exposure and risk of injury. The incumbent works both inside and outside and is exposed to hot and humid weather and/or extremely cold weather with temperatures ranging from below 0 to above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Ice, road oils, and other items such as loose gravel and rocks may create hazardous conditions. The operator is subjected to noise, vibration, dust, dirt, oils, solvents, and fumes from motors and exhausts. When working inside, the incumbent must ensure proper ventilation to minimize fumes caused by equipment or vehicles. The incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, abrasions, bruises, and strains while servicing and operating equipment. The incumbent is required to follow all prescribed safety practices to wear and use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and devices such as protective hearing devices (earplugs), safety glasses, respirators, gloves, steel-toed boots, flash shield, eye goggles and hard hats to prevent injury. Welding involves exposure to fumes, infrared and ultraviolet radiations, heat, flying sparks and the possibility of eye injury and burns. The incumbent will wear proper protective clothing and devices such as earplugs, welding helmet, gloves and steel toed boots. The incumbent is subject to continued safety training and is required to follow established safety and environmental health procedures and practices.
