Director of Software Platform Engineering

Job Summary:

The Director of Software Platform Engineering is responsible for leading, directing and overseeing ASP’s software platform team. The role will require a very strong technical and project management background with exceptional organizational, planning and interpersonal skills. This position will play a critical role in shaping the core software platform, driving innovation and excellence in product engineering and will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, to shape the future of our software solutions, leveraging state-of-the-art technologies, including AI to meet the evolving needs of the medical industry. As Director of Software Platform Engineering, this position reports to the Director of Software and Connectivity.

Responsibilities:

Under limited supervision, general direction, etc. and in accordance with all applicable government laws, regulations and ASP policies, procedures and guidelines, this position:

• Strategic Leadership: Spearhead the software platform engineering team, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

• Platform Development: Oversee the design, development, and deployment of software platforms in collaboration with other software engineering teams.

• Cloud and IoT Development: Leverage cloud services (such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud) to build scalable, resilient, and cost-effective solutions andcollaborate with IoT teams to integrate sensor data, edge computing, and real-time analytics into the platform.

• Cybersecurity and DevOps: Drive cybersecurity standards and processes across the software organization to maintain robust security measures that safeguard data, systems, and networks in the product ecosystem. Ensure seamless deployment and operation of the software development activities through regular improvements to the CI/CD pipeline.

• Team Management: Mentor, grow, and attract top talent and high-performing software engineering platform team, promoting professional growth and fostering a positive work environment. Responsible for managing high-performance teams, ensuring they are highly motivated and productive.

• Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with Manufacturing, Product Managers, Marketing, and Finance teams to align business and strategic goals with technology-driven initiatives, also with sales and customer support, to understand user needs and translate them into actionable product improvements.

• Technology Strategy: Stay abreast of emerging technologies and trends within the software development landscape, identifying opportunities to integrate innovative solutions that drive competitive advantage.

• Regulatory Compliance: Ensure the software platform adheres to relevant regulatory standards and guidelines, particularly those applicable to medical device and healthcare software.

• Quality Assurance: Maintain a strict focus on managing unit tests, system tests, and regression tests. Ensure automated testing is prioritized to maintain high quality and efficiency.

• Agile Process Management: Estimate work units, manage the Agile development process effectively, and ensure the team delivers on deadlines. Know when to push hard to meet critical deadlines and when to protect the team from undue stress by managing upwards effectively.

• Performs other duties assigned as needed

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

• 15+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.

• Proven track record of success in a senior leadership role within software platform engineering, preferably in the healthcare or medical device sector.

• Expertise in managing large-scale, cloud-based infrastructure and the related connectivity solutions, including building Infrastructure-as-Code.

• Strong understanding of DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, container orchestration (Kubernetes), and infrastructure as code (IaC) tools.

• Expertise with Cybersecurity and Security Ops as related to software engineering.

• Proven track record of integrating state-of-the-art technologies like AI into products.

• Demonstrated ability to think strategically and drive complex projects to completion.

• Extensive experience in full-stack software development, with a deep understanding of both front-end and back-end technologies.

• Strong background in agile development methodologies, DevOps practices, and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines.

• Certifications around an Enterprise Agile Framework is a huge plus.

• Exceptional leadership and communication skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate a team towards achieving ambitious goals.

• In-depth knowledge of embedded systems and firmware technologies, with relevant hands-on experience in configuration management and deployment of board support packages such as Yocto and QNX.

• Hands on proficiency in high-level programming languages like C# ( java), Python, JavaScript, and Excel, with the ability to write and understand SQL as needed.

• Expert in estimating work units and managing the Agile development process to maximize team productivity and efficiency.

• Maniacal about quality, with a rigorous focus on automated testing to ensure high standards are met consistently.

• Adept at managing up as well as down, balancing the need to push teams to meet deadlines with the necessity of protecting them from excessive stress.
