Job Summary

The Director of Academic Advising, under general direction, oversees and coordinates academic advising services and programs for new and returning students at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversees the academic advising services and programs for new, returning and transfer students.

  • Develops and maintains an Advisor’s Handbook reflecting common policies and guidelines based on best practices.

  • Oversees advising centers to ensure they remain in conjunction with the College Deans' Offices and that each advising center serves the distinct interests and needs of its constituents appropriately.

  • Works collaboratively with Deans and Advisors to engage them in decision-making and foster teamwork and team building.

  • Coordinates advising strategies with various campus entities and programs to maximize student success and retention.

  • Provides professional development concerning best practices with advisors in regards to retention.

  • Provides academic advising services to students.

  • Develops, executes and assesses office policies, procedures and technology related to advising.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education – Bachelor's degree in applicable field.

  • Experience - Ten years of related experience in higher education.

  • Supervisory Experience – a minimum of three years supervisory experience in an academic advising environment.

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.

  • Budget management and strategic planning.

  • Banner or similar proprietary systems for higher education.

Ability to:

  • Multitask and work cooperatively with others.

  • Strong verbal and communication skills.

Licensing / Professional Certification – None.

Supervision of Others

This position generally supervises employees.

Other Requirements

  • Evening and weekend work may be required.

  • Position requires on campus, face-to-face interactions.

  • Position requires maintaining a regular schedule of attendance on campus and in the workplace.

Salary: $76,000/annual
