Job Description

Job Description Summary:

The Chief Research Officer (CRO) and Director, Texas Semiconductor Institute (TSI), leads research and operations for the research lab and the research fab to be built for the Semiconductor Institute on the Texas A&M-RELLIS campus. Additionally, the CRO will harness and partner on collaborative research opportunities throughout the Texas A&M system comprising 11 universities and eight state agencies. The CRO and Director is responsible for leading efforts to identify, hire and on-board requisite talent to achieve TSI research objectives. As a research leader, the CRO and Director will lead and partner amongst university, consortia, industry and government affiliates to spearhead industry and government relevant research supporting development and coordination of multiple PI technical areas.

Responsibilities:

  • Plans, organizes, and supervises the work of a staff of scientists, engineers, and technicians supporting semiconductor research lab and research fab facilities.

  • Evaluates progress of the staff and results obtained and recommends improvements to achieve overall objectives.

  • Defines staffing needs, selection/ assessment criteria, and hiring process for research/engineering staff.

  • Contribute as a distinguished semiconductor process expert to build a research portfolio both within TSI as well as in partnership with others that advances semiconductor research addressing key challenges the industry is facing for advance node wafer processing.

  • Plans and directs research projects, serving as Principal Investigator.

  • Coordinates research and development activities amongst disciplines. This involves exploration of subject area, definition of scope and selection of problems for investigation, and development of novel concepts and approaches in technical areas.

  • Collaborate with finance and legal teams to negotiate contracts and partnerships supportive of the TSI vision, mission and strategic objectives.

  • In collaboration with partners, leads research on equipment, materials and process solutions that achieve breakthrough performance against key industry challenges.

  • Attends, presents and builds networks at key semiconductor conferences and events addressing TSI concerns and goals.

  • Stays abreast of new technical methods and developments affecting semiconductor research for the purpose of recommending changes in emphasis of programs or new programs warranted by such developments.

  • Identifies, proposes and leads new strategies/initiatives that are critical to TSI; guides programs of national or international significance.

  • Establishes new scientific and technical directions resulting in new fields of study; primary resource to A&M system and affiliated partners in identifying future problems, research trends and opportunities.

  • Presents papers, leads symposia and chairs committees; participates on advisory/policy boards, journals and societies; serves as peer reviewer of major technical programs; networks nationally and internationally. Contributions enhance TSI staff, business volume, and facilities/equipment.

  • Leads the development and implementation of new and/or expanded technical capabilities that will impact future research projects; provides the organization with a distinct competitive advantage in procuring funding.

  • Typically directs and/or participates in major proposal preparation and presentation.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • Ph.D. Degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Ten years of related experience in management, at least eight years of which are in an industrial semiconductor setting.

    • Modeling and/or EDA experience.

    • Experience working for defense and/or other government contracting.
