Description

San Mateo County Health's Public Health, Policy & Planning Division is seeking a well-qualified individual for the position of Certified Medical Assistant-Edison Clinic-Spanish Speaking Required. The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) will provide excellent customer service for extremely vulnerable, complex patients, and is energetic, flexible, a team player, and focused on patient safety and satisfaction.

There is currently one regular vacancy in the Public Health, Policy & Planning Division located in San Mateo, CA, but will travel/drive mobile health vehicles throughout the County. Clinics are run out of either a mobile coach or sprinter van, complete with medical formularies. The 42-foot mobile health coach requires a Class B license to operate. Hours range from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. or from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. with alternative work schedule flexibility needed, though on a consistent basis.

San Mateo County Mobile Clinic provides client-centered medical care to residents and families who are 18 years and older. Mobile Clinic sites are located throughout San Mateo County to improve access to care for the community and aims to provide care for urgent and chronic medical needs, while helping individuals navigate and link to mental health and specialty care. This is a field-based position with a particular focus on people experiencing homelessness and those living in shelters.

These are mobile clinics so the CMA should be able and willing to drive the mobile vehicles to and from the various locations; the successful candidate selected for this position must obtain a Class B driver license within six months of hire date. The training and fees associated to obtain a Class B license will be funded by Public Health, Policy & Planning.

Certified Medical Assistant tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Rooming patients

  • Taking vital signs

  • Ordering supplies

  • Assisting physicians with procedures

  • Administering immunizations and other medication as approved by physician

  • Documenting information into electronic medical record

  • Patient education

  • Driving mobile health coach or sprinter van on a regular basis; coach requires a Class B driver license to operate

  • Assisting Registered Nurses and providers with various other duties

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Principles, techniques and procedures specific to area of assignment.

  • Principles and techniques in delivering patient care services related to personal hygiene, comfort, treatment, transportation, rehabilitation and physical or psychosocial needs.

  • Infection control.

  • Diagnostic imaging.

  • Safe lifting techniques.

If assigned to Option 2 – Outpatient Care:

  • Theory and practice of total body substance isolation.

  • Patients' rights.

  • Elder and child abuse, and domestic violence reporting requirements.

Skill/Ability to:

  • Follow oral and written instructions.

  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.

  • Perform a variety of tasks and activities.

  • Develop and maintain empathetic attitudes toward patients.

  • Provide assistance in delivering patient care in a medical setting such as bathing, feeding, bed making, dressing, and sterilization of patient care equipment.

  • Observe and record patient conditions and vital signs.

  • Lift and transport patients and heavy items such as supplies and equipment.

  • Work with patients with multiple diagnoses.

  • Work with a culturally, socio-economically diverse patient population of varying ages.

Education and Experience:

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:

Option 2 - Outpatient Care: One year of experience in an outpatient clinic or doctor's office as a nurse's assistant or medical assistant.

Licensure/Certification:

Option 2 - Outpatient Care: Possession of a Medical Assistant Certificate or a certificate of completion or degree from an accredited medical assisting program.

Some positions may require a current and valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate issued by the American Heart Association or a valid Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate issued by the American Red Cross.

Possession of a valid California class B driver license OR must obtain a Class B driver license within six months of hire date.

Language Requirement: Ability to speak, read, and write fluently in both English and Spanish.

Current County of San Mateo and County of San Mateo Superior Court of California employees with at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in a classified regular, probationary, extra-help/limited term positions prior to the final filing date will receive five points added to their final passing score.

A copy of the certificate of completion of an approved medical assisting program must be submitted with the application by attaching to the application online. Failure to do so will result in disqualification from this recruitment.

The examination process will consist of an application screening (weight: pass/fail) based on the candidates' application and responses to the supplemental questions. Candidates who pass the application screening will be invited to a panel interview (weight: 100%). Depending on the number of applicants, an application appraisal of education and experience may be used in place of other examinations or further evaluation of work experience may be conducted to group applicants by level of qualification. All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. All examinations will be given in San Mateo County, California and applicants must participate at their own expense.
