Job Description

General Summary
Assists the Research Center Director in providing access to research material in the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum. This includes identification, description and housing of library and archival material; providing reference services to museum staff and the public; assisting in the planning and preparation of museum exhibitions; and filing and other clerical work.
Responsibilities:
Assist in the processing, arrangement and description of archival collections, library material, and other collection items and general maintenance of the Research Center collection, including routine shelving and filing
Provide instruction on access to Research Center material and assist faculty, museum staff, students, and the public with reference requests
Participate in the digitization of Research Center material and provide description of digitized material
Assist in the identification of preservation needs and implement preservation measures through selection and use of appropriate archival equipment and supplies
Catalog archival, library, research material, collects and maintains statistical data and prepares reports as needed
Assist in the development and implementation of exhibitions and public programming related to the Research Center collection
Supervise and assist in training student assistants, interns and volunteers
Assist in the acquisition of books, periodicals, archival material, photographs and other research material

Necessary Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Library and Information Science, History, or Museum Studies or equivalent combination of education and experience
Three (3) years of experience in a library/archives/museum setting
Familiarity with common computer software: word processing, database, spreadsheet; ability to work under deadline pressure.
Ability to work with the museum staff, university staff and faculty, students, and the public
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree
Six (6) years of experience in arrangement and description of archival material, reference work, cataloging and basic preservation work.
Experience in arrangement and description of archival material, reference work, cataloging and basic preservation work.
Familiarity with library and archives descriptive standards, including MARC, DACS and Encoded Archival Description.
Knowledge of digital technology.
Familiarity with Texas and Texas Panhandle history
