Job Description

General Summary

Assists the Research Center Director in providing access to research material in the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum. This includes identification, description and housing of library and archival material; providing reference services to museum staff and the public; assisting in the planning and preparation of museum exhibitions; and filing and other clerical work.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the processing, arrangement and description of archival collections, library material, and other collection items and general maintenance of the Research Center collection, including routine shelving and filing

  • Provide instruction on access to Research Center material and assist faculty, museum staff, students, and the public with reference requests

  • Participate in the digitization of Research Center material and provide description of digitized material

  • Assist in the identification of preservation needs and implement preservation measures through selection and use of appropriate archival equipment and supplies

  • Catalog archival, library, research material, collects and maintains statistical data and prepares reports as needed

  • Assist in the development and implementation of exhibitions and public programming related to the Research Center collection

  • Supervise and assist in training student assistants, interns and volunteers

  • Assist in the acquisition of books, periodicals, archival material, photographs and other research material

Necessary Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Library and Information Science, History, or Museum Studies or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Three (3) years of experience in a library/archives/museum setting

  • Familiarity with common computer software: word processing, database, spreadsheet; ability to work under deadline pressure.

  • Ability to work with the museum staff, university staff and faculty, students, and the public

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree

  • Six (6) years of experience in arrangement and description of archival material, reference work, cataloging and basic preservation work.

  • Experience in arrangement and description of archival material, reference work, cataloging and basic preservation work.

  • Familiarity with library and archives descriptive standards, including MARC, DACS and Encoded Archival Description.

  • Knowledge of digital technology.

  • Familiarity with Texas and Texas Panhandle history
