Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Advanced Reactor Fuels System Engineer to work in our Nuclear Safety Analysis department. Our team works at 4x10 schedule located out of our Materials and Fuels Complex with every Friday off.

As a Reactor Fuels System Engineer, responsible for determination of adequate functionality, and performance of fuel behavior for advanced reactor demonstration activities at INL. This will involve reviewing engineering calculations, specifications, fabrication reports and other technical documentation associated fuel fabrication and acceptance and performing determining operability for fuel system behavior.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Select and widely apply advanced nuclear engineering design principles, theories, and concepts (which may include reactor fuel and packaging). Decompose project goals into defined and controlled design requirements.
  • Use design methodologies, technologies, and processes which are best practice for the technical discipline to verify fuel design, and to validate that the design meets defined requirements.
  • Document the design (controlled and approved models, drawings, specifications, design descriptions) to establish conformance with design requirements and applicable codes and standards.
  • Establish and oversee testing, inspection, and quality requirements to ensure technical features important to design responsibilities are maintained.
  • Perform analysis, reviews and in some cases design tasks supporting program interactions with (experiment) sponsors, operations, and engineering organizations to ensure that project related operations are performed in a manner that is consistent with the facility authorization.
  • Conduct research supporting nuclear processes (including fuel qualification efforts and modeling of used accident tolerant, TRISO, molten metal, and ceramic fuel) with a focus on the application of modern performance codes into existing programmatic efforts.
  • Support transformational fuel qualification efforts, especially rapid development of fuel performance codes based on accelerated testing platforms.
  • Be the cognizant system engineer for reactor fuel that at that Materials and Fuels Complex and establish a technical basis to verify existing fuel safety performance can be assured within the approved authorization basis.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree Nuclear or Mechanical Engineering, or other related technical discipline plus 5 years relevant experience, or Advanced Degree in Nuclear or Mechanical Engineering, or other related degree with 2 years relevant experience.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nuclear or Mechanical Engineering and 9 years of experience. Master's and 6 years of experience. PhD and 4 years of experience.
  • Relevant experience includes experience with nuclear fuels fabrication and performance analysis.

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.

Preferred:

  • Advanced degree in Nuclear Engineering or directly related engineering field from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • Experience in nuclear fuels and materials, reactor physics, thermal hydraulics, primary design, analysis tools/methods, and closely related technical areas.

Job Information:

  • The pay range for this position is: Level 450 – ($91,008 - $186,588)/Level 460 ($109,260 - $223,908). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
