An overview of this role
As an Engineering Manager at GitLab, you see your team as your most valuable product. Your primary focus is on the people you lead—guiding them, nurturing their growth, and ensuring they have everything they need to succeed. While you're technically credible and understand the details of the work being done, your role is about empowering a world-class engineering team, fostering their health, and driving delivery on product commitments.
In this role, you will lead the Analytics Instrumentation team, which is responsible for building tools that allow GitLab and its customers to track and measure user engagement within our platform. The insights gained from this work are invaluable, helping shape GitLab’s product roadmap and ensuring we continually improve user experiences.
Challenges in this role include growing top-tier talent, improving productivity, and working cross-functionally to achieve collaborative goals. You’ll work closely with key leaders, data scientists, product managers, analytics and software engineers while maintaining a laser focus on delivering quality work on time. Your leadership impacts key decisions across departments based on the analytics and insights your team generates.

What You’ll Do
Manage a team (https://handbook.gitlab.com/handbook/engineering/starting-new-teams/#team-construction) of engineers, fostering a collaborative and innovative team culture to drive high performance.
Collaborate with the product manager and key leaders across the company to create a shared roadmap and drive adoption of product usage data, creating significant impact through data-driven decision making by providing reliable metrics.
Provide long-term strategic direction of GitLab’s in-product event instrumentation system (https://docs.gitlab.com/ee/development/internal_analytics/) for internal and external customers
Foster technical decision making on the team, but make final decisions when necessary
Draft quarterly OKRs and Engineering KPIs (https://handbook.gitlab.com/handbook/company/kpis/#engineering-kpis)
Improve product quality, security, and performance
Author project plans for epics
Run agile project management processes
Provide guidance and coaching to team members on technical contributions, product architecture, and other areas.
Maintain empathy for the team by keeping awareness of engineering processes and practices. Examples might be: evaluating individual workflow during one on ones, conducting code reviews, or working on non-critical path bugs and/or features.
Actively seek and hire globally-distributed talent
Conduct managerial interviews for candidates, and train the team to do technical interviews
Contribute to the sense of psychological safety on your team
Generate and implement process improvements
Hold regular 1:1s (https://handbook.gitlab.com/handbook/leadership/1-1/) with all members of their team
Give regular and clear feedback around the individual’s performance (https://handbook.gitlab.com/handbook/leadership/1-1/suggested-agenda-format/)

Participate in the Incident Management on-call rotation (https://handbook.gitlab.com/handbook/engineering/infrastructure/incident-management/#incident-manager-responsibilities) to help ensure the availability goals for GitLab.com are met, by working with reliability engineers and development team members.
What You’ll Bring
Exquisite communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with technical and non-technical stakeholders across departments, regularly achieving consensus.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts into actionable insights help evaluate options, and make informed technical recommendations in alignment with bigger-picture goals.
Demonstrated progressive experience in a leadership role with up-to-date technical experience
Demonstrated ability to process a high volume of work with high complexity with nonstandard solutions
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with a focus on delivering high-quality results
In-depth technical experience with SQL, and one of Python, Ruby, or Go, enabling effective oversight of data pipeline development and processes.
Experience with product analytics solutions such as Snowplow, Segment, Mixpanel, Pendo, or similar solutions.
Working knowledge of OLAP systems such as ClickHouse, Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift or similar
Familiarity with data platforms and distributed systems
Demonstrated ability to work across multiple time zones and cultures.

Experience working in a peak-performance organization
Working knowledge architecting and realizing infrastructure to support data platforms
Working knowledge of data transformation tools such as dbt
Working knowledge of cloud infrastructure technologies such as Lambda, S3, Kubernetes, etc.
Working knowledge of modern frontend frameworks such as React or Vue.js

The base salary range for this role’s listed level is currently for residents of listed locations only. Grade level and salary ranges are determined through interviews and a review of education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities of the applicant, equity with other team members, and alignment with market data.
