Job Description: Secondary Assistant Principal/Activities Director

REPORTS TO: Superintendent

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

STATUS: Full Time, Salary

DATE REVISED: December 2024

BASIC FUNCTION:

Provide leadership and supervision of building staff that will promote the educational development of each staff member and student.

SPECIFICATIONS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Masters degree or higher in Education from an accredited college or university.

  • Valid Iowa administrators license with appropriate endorsements.

  • A minimum of four years successful teaching in the secondary grades.

  • Administrative experience preferred.

  • Completion of Child Abuse Reporting Training.

  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • 261 or 262-Day Contract.

  • The VSCSD Board of Directors establishes salary & work year.

EVALUATION: The Superintendent evaluates the performance of this job.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Adhere to applicable state and federal laws, rules and regulations, board policies and administrative rules.

  • Demonstrate organization and professionalism in fulfilling the responsibilities of the position.

  • Maintain a “service orientation” and treat all students, parents, staff, and visitors with professional courtesy.

  • Demonstrate a positive attitude toward school, students and job while communicating the same to the community.

  • Attend seminars, trainings, classes, and professional development as needed to stay current with state and federal regulations and requirements and maintain licensure.

  • Dress appropriately for the position and work required.

  • Accept constructive criticism and suggestions while seeking to improve each performance responsibility.

  • Maintain professionalism related to confidentiality of student records and the school operation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Shared responsibility for student discipline and welfare – to include all necessary parent contact and correspondence, liaison with other helping agencies such as the Department of Human Services.

  • Serves as primary administrator for the alternative high school program.

  • Provides information to students and parents about school programs and services.

  • Provides opportunity for parent and citizen involvement in advisory and volunteer groups.

  • Maintains an awareness of factors outside the school which affect the school structure.

  • Assists in the administration of safety and security procedures for assigned buildings, equipment, grounds, and transportation.

  • Primary responsibility for attendance and truancy matters.

  • Serves as administrative liaison to the activities director.

  • Oversees the budget and financial accounting for high school activity programs.

  • Serves as liaison between the school, staff, students, and community for all assigned programs.

  • Shares responsibility for the recruitment and selection of assigned staff members.

  • Assist with the development and production of student calendars, handbooks, schedules, bulletins, student directory and publicity.

  • Maintains accurate records and prepares required reports.

  • Makes recommendations for programs, staff, and facility needs when appropriate.

  • Assists the principal in evaluating certified staff, classified staff, coaches, and activity supervisors.

  • From time-to-time, relieve the principal of such duties that may prevent him/her from fulfilling his/her chief responsibility of promoting and maintaining the educational well-being of each student in the school.

  • Recognize and support the educational value of team management.

  • Organize and administer the overall program of extracurricular athletics, both intramural and interscholastic, for the district.

  • Provide leadership in the selection, assignment, and evaluation of athletic coaches and staff members.

  • Foster good school-community relations by keeping the community aware of and responsive to the athletic program.

  • Assume responsibility for the organization and scheduling of all interscholastic athletic events.

  • Emphasize to coaches and athletes safety precautions and ensure that all athletic activities are properly supervised by coaches.

  • Communicate to coaches expectations and responsibilities in terms of their performance.

  • Make sure coaches and athletes are aware of rules, regulations, and policies of the district.

  • Inform of all conference, sectional, district, regional, and state competitions.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Able to dial, answer and communicate via a telephone in a clear, precise voice.

  • Able to write and record reports utilizing basic computer functions.

  • Able to read and interpret policies, procedures and employee handbook.

  • Able to hear and speak in order to communicate with students, parents, co-workers, and supervisors.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Primary work setting is the Assigned Attendance Center but duties at times may require working within various attendance centers in the district or accompanying students to special events such as work experience or field trips.

  • May be required to ride a school bus or drive school vehicles to carry out responsibilities of the position.

  • May be required to work additional hours as required for special events or during certain times of the year.
