Job Purpose and Impact

As Fermentation Advisor, you will work across the global fermentation community of practice to develop and implement innovative solutions that further Cargill’s competitive advantage as a global leader in large scale fermentation for food, feed, health and bioindustrial segments. In this role within the global corporate fermentation research and development team, you will influence the strategic direction of the domain capability development, drive project pipeline and portfolio creation, and lead research and implementation through a combination of execution and technical management.

Key Accountabilities

  • Leverage deep scientific insight in microbiology, microbial physiology, biochemical engineering, equipment/process design and applied mathematics to develop, optimize and troubleshoot fermentation processes.

  • Provide thought leadership in technology, process and new product development in microbial fermentation.

  • Participate in strategy development; support talent, infrastructure and capability development in fermentation R&D.

  • Provide technical leadership on peer review of internal research and on due diligence of external technology.

  • Develop strong business/customer understanding to ultimately influence, drive and create business opportunities.

  • Lead and execute research within strategic global technology programs.

  • Foster relationships with internal and external research partners, as needed.

  • Mentor more junior team members in the development of processes and products to further the department’s goals.

  • Provide expert thought leadership in the biotechnology field and work with limited direction, using additional research and interpretation to identify issues or problems. Provide direction to supporting team members and be a strategic contributor.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • BSc degree in industrial microbiology, biotechnology, biochemical/bioscience engineering or a related field.

  • Command and application of microbiology, microbial physiology, reaction stoichiometry, kinetics, thermodynamics and biochemical engineering fundamentals as applied to bioprocess design and optimization,.

  • Ability to leverage external network and guide work with third-party technology providers.

  • Confirmed thought and strategic leadership.

  • Knowledge and application of mathematical, statistical and quantification principles and tools.

  • Experience working across organizations and geographies.

  • Fluent in English (oral and written).

  • Minimum of six years of related work experience.

  • Open to travel up to 20%

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in a related field.

  • Ten or more years of work experience in the fermentation industry, leading to deep subject matter expertise.

  • Practical experience with a broad range of fermentation processes and organisms at lab, pilot and plant scale.

  • Hands-on experience with scale up and scale down of fermentation and downstream processes.

  • Proven ability to conduct/coordinate complex fermentation experiments with a high level of excellence to ensure precise and accurate data.

  • Knowledge of fermentor and unit operation design, process control and automation.

  • Strong statistical foundation and numerical aptitude, with working knowledge of software tools like Python, JMP, Minitab, R or similar.

  • Experience in partnering with commercial fermentation plants to support problem resolution or evaluate/implement new process technology.

  • Proven ability to influence stakeholders and to implement change without direct authority, using data, technical knowledge and inclusive approaches.

  • Extensive experience in technical leadership on fermentation R&D projects (defining goals; leading team meetings; establishing and communicating plans, timelines, resource needs and overall project progress updates to team and stakeholders; navigating internal PMO/governance/innovation processes).

  • Experience with mentoring/coaching/training more junior colleagues.

  • Demonstrated ability to independently translate (ambiguous) client requests or opportunities into experimental plans.
