Description

Under direction of a Clinical Coordinator, the incumbent will provide direct or indirect nursing care to hospital patients in the Intensive Care Unit and perform related work as required.

The ideal candidate will possess at least three (3) years of ICU experience caring for a diverse population of critical care patients to include surgical, medical, and neuro-surgical populations.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

The Per Diem Nurse is distinguished from the Registered Nurse classification in that Per Diem Nurses are scheduled to work on an as-needed basis (intermittent) to supplement staffing needs.

BILINGUAL INCENTIVE: Some positions may be eligible for bilingual incentive depending on the applicable memorandum of agreement and the needs of the department. In order to qualify for this incentive, incumbents in eligible positions must take and pass the applicable bilingual fluency examination.

EDUCATIONAL INCENTIVE: Some positions may be eligible for educational incentive pay in addition to the adjusted base rate of pay in the noted amounts for educational attainments which are not specifically required for the classification:

  • Bachelor's Degree $1.25/hr

  • Graduate's Degree $1.75/hr

    DIFFICULT TO RECRUIT (“DTR”) ASSIGNMENT PREMIUM: The Director-Human Resources may authorize an increase up to and including five percent (5%) of base rate of pay (CNA Per Diem Unit MOA (Sec. 809).

Per Diem Registered Nurse III is represented by the California Nurses' Association (CNA) and is eligible for overtime compensation.

The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future Regular (including Temporary and Fixed-term), Intermittent, and Extra Help vacancies for this position only. There are currently three (3) Per Diem (Intermittent) vacancies in Ventura County Medical Center’s Intensive Care Unit.

TENTATIVE SCHEDULE

OPENING DATE: October 12, 2023

Examples Of Duties

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Utilizing nursing process, plans and participates in providing daily patient care;

  • Follows prescribed orders concerning treatments and medications;

  • Makes patient observations, records and reports all pertinent information;

  • Provides follow-through on critical thinking;

  • Assists in examination and treatment;

  • Provides unit organization and is responsible for completion of all delegated and indicated nursing duties;

  • Assists in training, supervision and evaluation of ancillary personnel and in the training of new personnel; and

  • Performs other related duties as required.

Typical Qualifications

These are entrance requirements to the exam process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE

Per Diem Registered Nurse III - requires at least five (5) years of full time professional registered nursing experience, including two (2) years of full-time experience in an Intensive Care Unit. These employees may be appointed to work on specialized short-term projects such as hospital accreditation or on other projects that require specialized administrative duties and responsibilities.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing.

  • Must possess and maintain a current, valid license as a Registered Nurse issued by the State of California.

  • Must possess a current, valid Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification by first day of employment and maintain it thereafter.

  • Must possess a current, valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification by first day of employment and maintain it thereafter.

  • Must successfully complete the Health Care Agency Pharmacology examination within three (3) months of employment.

    DESIRED:

  • Critical Care certification (CCRN)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

Working knowledge of: the theory, techniques, and practices of professional nursing; knowledge of medical terminology and hospital routine and equipment; medicines and narcotics; vasoactive drip management; ventilator management; hemodynamic monitoring; intracranial pressure monitoring; arterial line monitoring; massive transfusion protocols.

Working ability to: plan and organize nursing care; train and supervise non-professional staff; establish and maintain confidence of patients and staff, work effectively in different hospital departments on shifts as required; manage the care and post-operative recovery of critically ill patients.
