Job Description

This is the recruit level officer learning and developing the knowledge and abilities required to function as a conservation officer. Responsibilities include learning how to enforce the laws, rules and orders relating to natural resources, environmental protection and general criminal law. Learn to check licenses, permits and species of fish and wildlife. Learn how to investigate complaints. Learn how to issue citations and make arrests for natural resource and criminal violations. Learn the correct procedure when contacting prosecutors and judges, serving warrants, and appearing and testifying in court. Learn how to complete and submit reports, maintain records and files, and respond to public inquiries. Learn how to operate snowmobiles, boats, ORV’s, and patrol vehicles, while maintaining them in good working condition. Learn to attend meetings and take part in departmental programs. Learn to ensure the availability of and how to teach all recreation safety classes. Learn when to provide assistance to other law enforcement agencies. Learn to enforce statutes and regulations that relate directly to public safety.

Employees shall establish, and maintain, residency within the boundaries of their assignment or no more than 15 miles, outside of their assignment. Residency must be established and maintained within the State of Michigan.

Non-probationary employees will have 60 days to establish residency as specified in LED policy 3.2.24. Any extension beyond 60 days requires Law Enforcement Division Chief approval.

  • Be a United States Citizen.

  • Must be at least 21 years of age before graduation from the MCOLES basic law enforcement recruit training academy.

  • Become a resident of the State of Michigan by the completion of the Probationary Training Program (PTP).

  • Possess a valid Michigan driver’s license and the ability to obtain a valid Michigan driver's license.

  • Possess a clean criminal record absent of any felony convictions.

  • Submit to and pass a thorough background investigation measuring the applicant’s suitability for law enforcement work.

Vacation and Sick Leave:Eligible full-time employees receive between15 and 35 personal daysand13 sick daysper year that may be rolled over to the following year if not used. Eligible employees also receive an additional day each year for community service or school functions.

Paid Parental Leave:Eligible employees can take12 weeks of paid leaveimmediately after a birth or adoption to allow needed time together at home with a new child.

Paid Holidays:Eligible employees receive 13 or 14 paid holidays each year including New Year’s Eve and Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Election Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving Friday, Christmas Eve and Day.
