The RN Delegating School Nurse delegates the assignment of routine nursing tasks to Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP). The RN is responsible for continuous oversight of the delegated tasks and maintaining documentation of the UAP.

The oversight includes ensuring that delegated tasks are within the best interest of the student and apart of the students IHP/ 504 plan. The RN is also responsible for assessing competency and skills of the UAP who will be performing routine standardized nursing tasks.

The oversight will include supervision of the UAP’s as required by regulation, contract and personnel management associated with the clinical delivery. The RN Delegating School Nurse is accountable to all federal, state, and local contracts and programs, and Amergis requirements.

The RN Delegating School Nurse is also responsible for the ongoing evaluation of UAP’s in collaboration with the district nurse. Critical to this role is the assurance of clinical skills and competency of caregivers as well as safety for the student. This position will include ongoing caregiver supervision, development and evaluation under the direction of the District Building Nurse and Amergis Healthcare Staffing requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Determines if delegated task is within the best interest and safety of the student outlined in the student’s IHP/504 Plan and permitted by state regulations

  • Verifies that the delegated tasks are within the scope of practice as determined by State Board of

  • Nursing, National Association of School Nurses and Amergis policy

  • Handles onsite evaluation of the competency of the UAP and their written documentation is required by the delegating RN

  • Complete all trainings and attains all certifications as required by federal, state, or program requirements

  • Provides clinical oversight, support and care management as required by contract and/or regulation

  • Collaborates with district to provide supervision to school-based professionals while on assignment; assesses and investigates staff concerns and issues, and provides performance coaching when appropriate

  • Meets routinely with the district, to ensure communication, collaboration, and continuity of care

  • Provides and ensures student care coordination and transition management activities, as directed by contract

  • May be required to provide direct nursing care in the absence of an assigned SBP at a site

  • Partners with the District RN and Internal Amergis Clinical designee to ensure compliance on delegation and supervision requirements

  • Collaborates with the client’s building nurse/district nurse, medical director, and school-based professionals regarding nursing practice, training, client policies, procedures and protocols

  • Attends other mandatory training, orientations and meetings at the request of the client

  • Utilizes the nursing process to plan, implement and evaluate student’s care needs

  • Demonstrates on each assignment the provision of skilled nursing care in accordance with prescribed orders/IHP

  • Performs interventions, treatments and medications according to the identified priorities as outlined in the IHP

Minimum Requirements:

  • Active Registered Nurse licensure in state of practice

  • Minimum two years’ experience in school nursing preferred

  • Pediatric experience preferred

  • Supervisory experience, preferred

  • Successful completion of the “Delegating to Unlicensed Personnel” training module required

  • Complies with all relevant professional standards of practice

  • Participation and completion of Amergis' Competency program when applicable

  • Current CPR if applicable

  • TB Questionnaire, PPD or chest x-ray if applicable

  • Current Health certificate (per contract or state regulation)

  • Must meet all federal, state and local requirements

  • Successful completion of new hire training as applicable to job site

  • Understand patient confidentiality and HIPAA requirements

  • Ability to effectively elicit/provide information to and from appropriate individuals (including, but not limited to, supervisors, co-workers, clients) via strong communication skills; proficiency in the English language is required

  • Computer proficiency required

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
