Job Summary

The Senior Vice President & Chief Nursing Officer (SVP & CNO) is responsible for the development, implementation and delivery of nursing care, treatment, and services for the entire MVHS organization. The SVP & CNO holds full responsibility for the quality of nursing care provided. This includes the determination of the types and numbers of nursing staff necessary to provide nursing care and the development of a patient focused, team-oriented culture working in conjunction with all other medical, clinical, and therapeutic disciplines to ensure optimal service and superior outcomes. This position creates an environment and culture that enables MVHS to fulfill its mission by providing patient safety and patient-centered treatment.

Core Job Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the administration and organization of the Nursing discipline, including the planning, organizing, directing, coordinating and evaluating of nursing practice throughout the organization.

  • Develops nursing goals, objectives, policies and procedures in conjunction with the strategic plan to promote a positive patient experience.

  • Establishes a nursing service committee structure that facilitates the decision making process and assures the governance of professional and clinical practice.

  • Establishes and ensures on-going compliance with standards of nursing practice consistent with national practice standards and regulatory requirements.

  • Ensures the consistent implementation of a professional practice model and patient care delivery system which assure continuity of care and a high level of patient satisfaction.

  • Ensures that all patients receive a safe and optimal level of care and evaluation.

  • Rounds on all patient care areas to observe the delivery of care and interact with patients and staff.

  • Ensures the availability of clinical experts, educators and/or clinicians in all patient care areas.

  • Collaborates with nursing leaders in decentralized areas to ensure compliance with established standards of care.

  • Ensures the development and implementation of a comprehensive nursing recruitment and retention program.

  • Establishes required nursing competencies and ensures the consistent application of competency-based staff evaluations.

  • Responsible for clinical staff orientation, continuing education, professional development and in-service education.

  • Recognizes the achievements of all nursing staff.

  • Establishes an effective working relationship with the nursing collective bargaining unit. Participates in CBA negotiation.

  • Responsible for staffing, operating and capital budgets for all assigned areas.

  • Attends Board meetings, is a member of the Medical Executive Committee and participates in all executive management meetings.

  • Ensures the appropriate utilization of resources, the implementation of quality improvement initiatives and the efficient flow of patients.

  • Participates in strategic planning, marketing and the ongoing development of patient care services.

  • Fosters and role models collaborative practice and team work between nursing staff, administration, other departments and medical staff.

  • Establishes mechanisms for effective communication among all levels of nursing staff, and with other departments.

  • Employs effective problem solving and conflict resolution techniques within nursing and throughout MVHS.

  • Participates in professional nursing organizations, continuing education programs and other professional activities to remain current and foster professional collaboration.

  • Represents Nursing and the organization as a whole with various external agencies, exhibiting the highest level of professionalism and representing the best interests of the organization.

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Education/Experience Requirements

REQUIRED:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing

  • A Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing and a Master’s Degree in Nursing, Public Health, Healthcare Administration, or a related field are required.

  • A minimum of 10 years of recent nursing experience, including at least 5 years of nursing management experience, preferably in the top nursing position in a similar or larger organization.

  • A proven leader with the ability to develop and articulate a vision for nursing, convince others and then execute the vision.

  • Experience in developing and implementing innovative and effective patient care delivery models that yield positive patient outcomes and high patient satisfaction.

  • Excellent written, verbal and formal presentation skills.

  • A good blend of clinical, analytical and business skills.

  • A realistic and pragmatic decision maker and problem solver who is able to execute solutions and provide excellent follow-up.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as both a team leader and team member and promote collaboration among all levels of staff, administration and physicians.

  • Strong financial management skills, including the ability to manage large operating and capital budgets, and effectively use productivity measurements.

  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop nursing leadership staff, and appropriately delegate to assigned staff. Must empower others and have strong motivational skills and promote collaboration among all levels of staff, administration and physicians.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work and communicate with all levels of the organization. Must have an open, visible and approachable style.

  • The ability to develop strong working relationships with the medical staff based on mutual respect and trust.

Licensure/Certification Requirements

REQUIRED:

  • Eligible for licensure as a professional nurse within the State of New York.
