Employee Health Nurse Practitioner - Full Time Days

Job Summary

The Nurse Practitioner - Employee Health Specialist is a lead clinical professional supporting MVHS’s occupational health and wellness care, workers' compensation cases and disability management in conjunction with other clinical staff in Employee Health. The NP evaluates and treats both work and non-work-related conditions, providing direct care or referral to appropriate health care providers. Prescribes medications and therapeutics, orders diagnostics, interprets test results and refers employees to specialists as appropriate. The NP also assists in management of compensation injuries, case management, return to work program facilitation, treatment plan monitoring and follow-up paperwork from appropriate sites and providers. Participates in various committee meetings and teams. Works under the direction of the Employee Health Service Medical Director and the Director of Employee Health Services.

Core Job Responsibilities

  • Identifies, evaluates, treats and addresses minor illnesses and injuries of employees which may or may not be job related.

  • Conducts comprehensive assessments, interprets physical findings, orders diagnostic tests, makes decisions, and plans care according to established protocols.

  • Initiates and tests for exposures to blood borne pathogens, body fluid and infectious diseases following hospital protocol. Reviews/evaluates all laboratory and x-ray data and provides consultation to candidates, volunteers, and teammates regarding the results as needed.

  • Recognizes when consultation or referral is appropriate.

  • Educates employees about preventative care, medical issues and the use of prescribed medical treatments and medications.

  • Provides follow up care according to hospital policies. Follows up with patients concerning medical treatment, referral or emergency room visits appropriately.

  • Maintains the medical surveillance program and associated medical records. Orders appropriate laboratory tests, x-ray studies and other diagnostic services in order to determine job performance capabilities and to rule out communicable diseases.

  • Treats worker’s compensation patients and refers claims for worker’s compensation/leave management administration appropriately.

  • Supports the workers' compensation program and contributes to the development and implementation of employee health strategies, such as cost control, providing physical exams, care and treatment to injured employees.

  • Refers injured employees to medical specialists when appropriate.

  • Promotes optimal recovery through education and counseling of injured employees on the treatment plan.

  • Supports open communication with treating providers and worker’s compensation adjusters.

  • Reacts appropriately to occupational emergency situations.

  • Orders and stocks supplies, medications and vaccines as necessary.

  • Delivers nursing services such as mass flu vaccinations, TB skin testing, T-dap injections and respiratory fit program testing as needed to meet organizational and regulatory requirements.

  • Serves as an employee resource in supporting a culture of wellness. Provides educational material and counseling on current health issues, mandatory parts of the employee health program, bloodborne pathogen exposure and prophylaxis.

  • Performs ergonomic assessments and screens.

  • Provides services in accordance with regulatory guidelines and maintains employee health records and information in strict confidentiality. Documents all medical records thoroughly, accurately and promptly in accordance with policies and procedures.

  • Compiles/maintains data related to employee health, such as infectious diseases, employee injuries, trending and data analysis. Shares information with the Director and Medical Director.

  • Keeps Director informed regarding pertinent information, progress and statistical information on patients.

  • Keeps current in topics related to employee and occupational health through conferences, workshops, professional literature and other training. Shares and assimilates information into clinical practice.

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Education/Experience Requirements

REQUIRED:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner's Program OR certification from an accredited NP program

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience working in a family practice office or health clinic setting.

  • Knowledge of occupational health nursing and applicable regulations.

  • Ability to collaborate with employee health staff, medical staff, and the general public.

  • Ability function in a busy medical office setting.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English.

  • Proficient with MS Office and Epic/EMR, with the ability to learn new software rapidly.

PREFERRED:

  • Experience providing health education on an individual and group basis.

Licensure/Certification Requirements

REQUIRED:

  • Certification from an accredited NP program

  • Current NYS Nurse Practitioner license.

  • Current BCLS certification.

PREFERRED:

  • Active ANCC certification in relevant specialty
