The Undergraduate Programs Office in The Grainger College of Engineering seeks applicants for a Teaching Laboratory Coordinator for the Mechanical Testing Instructional Laboratory. This position is responsible for managing the Grainger Engineering Mechanical Testing Instructional Laboratory (MTIL), a teaching laboratory that services \> 900 undergraduate students each year, supporting courses offered by six engineering departments. This includes both equipment and time; setting and maintaining policies; supervising student staff; serving as a point of contact between multiple units on campus; and participating in long-range planning for laboratory operations.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Set and document operating policies and processes for the lab. Serve as a point of contact to all staff and students on the lab\'s policies, especially those concerning safety.
- Coordinate and conduct trainings and demonstrations for graduate teaching assistants, who assist with instructional exercises.
- Implement and enforce laboratory usage and safety policies.
- Manage staff by communicating job expectations, planning, monitoring, and appraising job results.
- Manage the use and allocation of equipment and resources in the Mechanical Testing Instructional Lab.
- Prepare and plan for the facility\'s instructional needs, including scheduling instructional lab times, proposing and executing equipment purchases, acquiring test specimens, materials, and supplies, and maintaining equipment.
- Communicate with department heads and faculty to determine their needs. Use independent judgment to allocate resources and time appropriately.
- Manage the operating budget of the lab.
- Periodically assist department faculty in developing new lab exercises or updating existing exercises and lab manuals.
- Engage with engineering faculty stakeholders to shape lab polices and improvements in the facility.
- Utilize data and employee feedback to make recommendations concerning opportunities and issues.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
A. Bachelor\'s degree in a scientific discipline closely related to the position
AND
two (2) years (24 months) of work experience in a laboratory or similar setting closely related to the position
OR
B. Total of five (5) years (60 months) of any combination of education in a scientific discipline and/or work experience in a laboratory or similar setting related to the position.
One (1) year (12 months) of supervisory and/or administrative experience.
NOTE: A Master\'s Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year (12 months) of work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Master\'s degree or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field
Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
Experience diagnosing and repairing mechanical equipment.
Experience with mechanical testing instrumentation.
Experience using and programming LabVIEW or similar data acquisition software.
Experience teaching college students.
Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 2408 - Laboratory Manager position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. The budgeted salary range for this position is \$85,000- \$95,000. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering nternal equity. This position will be expected to work at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus on a full-time basis per the University\'s Workplace Flexibility policy . Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
