The School of Earth, Society, and Environmental Change is seeking a Systems Engineer to assist in maintaining the IT infrastructure (including software, hardware, networking, cloud computing) used within the School of Earth, Society and Environment and to assist faculty, staff and students with this infrastructure.
Duties & Responsibilities
Systems Administration:
- Assist in the maintenance of the School\'s IT Infrastructure including:
- Provision and maintain virtual machines (using on-premises and/or cloud systems)
- Provision and maintain storage volumes on RAID systems
- Server/Storage/Networking hardware setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting
- Perform routine OS updates and software installation and configuration
- Provision end-user accounts and permissions
- Maintain system security using security best practices
- Install (Linux) software packages, including by compilation
- Maintain high performance computing cluster
- Document systems and procedures
End-User/Customer support and communication:
- Assist end-users of the above systems
- Answer questions via email, and meetings (virtual or in person) with end-users
- Develop a basic understanding of the customer\'s needs, methodology, tools
- Participate in regular meetings with customer groups
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Any one or any combination totaling two (2) years (24 months) from the following categories:
- A. College coursework which includes Information Technology (IT), IT Management, Programming, IT systems, or a closely related discipline, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent: 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months) Associate\'s Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months) 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months) Bachelor\'s Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)
- B. Work experience in IT-related functions, such as hardware/software support, programming, network design, network engineering, IT systems integration, or closely related field.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor\'s Degree in a STEM field
Experience in the following:
Linux system administration; Management of virtual machines in a server setting; Shell scripting; Networking and computer hardware; High performance computing (HPC) and computing clusters; System automation; Cloud computing (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud); Knowledge of technologies such as Hadoop, Docker, and Kubernetes; Numerical modeling and scientific applications; Assisting users as part of a help desk team
Successful Candidates Will Have
- Ability to program: write simple programs in at least two compiled or scripting computer languages
- Linux system administration skills (installation, security, management, troubleshooting, maintenance)
- Familiarity with virtual machines and cloud computing services
- Ability to work effectively with faculty, students, academic and non-academic staff members.
- Demonstrated ability to handle priorities with good organizational skills.
- Ability to work productively in a collaborative team environment.
- Independent problem solving skills and an ability to fully diagnose and troubleshoot technical issues.
- Ability to learn new tools and techniques to integrate new technology.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to communicate effectively with others
- Awareness of, and se sitivity to, cultural and linguistic differences.
- Ability to effectively communicate technical ideas to a non-technical audience.
- Self-motivated and able to work and prioritize without supervision on daily tasks and projects.
- Ability to understand and execute project methodologies, project tracking, communication and documentation.
- Basic knowledge of application analysis and service evaluation.
Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5031 - Information Technology Technical Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the deadline date. The budgeted salary range for the position is \$75,000 - \$90,000. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. The employee hired into this position will be expected to work onsite on a full-time basis. Sponsorship for Work authorization is not available for this position.
